To me it looks like its been kept up. The seats alone are in great shape for the mileage. You already have M030 and the LSD, it's a rare enough car and cool colour, if you really wanted you could sell those seats to one of many rennlisters looking for good replacement seats and throw in some Sparco's or Recaro's (etc) and you are race ready (more or less).
I say bite the bullet and jump on it.

I probably will, if the PPI checks out. I still actually haven't seen it as the owner has been out of town. Once I do though, if I don't find anything wrong with it (which I doubt), I'm going to schedule a PPI pretty quickly. I need to sell my S4 before I can buy the S2, but hopefully that won't take too long and the owner will hold the car with a sizeable deposit.

Damn, I was just in VA this weekend... (just in time for the snow ) I don't know about VA, but as I said, around here you bring $12K with you to the PPI...

I just sold an identical car to that one. Crystal Silver/Black '91 Coupe. Mine was right at 103k miles and in PERFECT shape, but a non-LSD , non-M030 car.

Bought in Nov. 2001 for $9k. Sold in Oct. '03 for $10.5k.

Anything under 10.5k is a STEAL on that car. PO doesn't know what they have apparently.

Ten is the number, go up or down from there.

Here are your bargaining points

You will want to change the shocks which are 550 delivered to your door, the cam tensioner and valve cover gasket is another 350, how are the tires?

if the clutch is original you should plan on the rubber disintegrating soon for another 500 parts, or 12-1400 installed. and motor mounts are probably getting ready too at about 300 for parts.

those are your bargaining points. saying the timing belt was changed doesnt mean the cam tensioner was changed.

I got a check for 15k from the insurance for an 89 with 74k miles, a freshly rebuilt motor, shocks, 18k on the clutch, etc. and no paintwork ever, no accidents ever, no dashcracks.etc.

I can't believe some are saying that car isn't worth 10 grand! That is ridiculous! You are insulting the owner by saying that, literally.

I'd drop 14k or more on that car w/o a PPI or even seeing it in person. It's just that rare and desirable to those "in the know". The PO could be asking $18k, and I wouldn't blink an eye.

That car (if in good mechanical shape) is easily worth $10K. Late S2's with LSD and M030 are few and far between. If you don't buy it, tell everyone here where it is so it can find a good home. My home would be great for it if I had any cash flow.

Well, pending a good PPI, I'm going to buy it, there's no question. I think we can work out a deal that is fair for both parties. The replies to this thread have given me an idea of a fair price. I'm not paying $14k, but I'm also not going to insult him by saying $8k. Now, if someone wants to buy an Audi S4, that would expedite this process.

Around here (not that it matters since the car is in NJ), that car would easily go for 10-11K, or more. Color, vintage, and M030/LSD all combine to make that a desirable car.

Hope you get it!

Knew I was taking a chance at 8 to 9k. So do like these guys say and boost it up a bit. Buy it, take a picture and put it in your avatar, have to get that Audi off of there!

Johnny,
It is only on this board that the car is worth 18k, and nobody on this board would spend it since boxsters are available with the same mileage for less than 18k.

An 89 S2 with 30k miles went for 15k in sept.

The mileage is not considered low, there was an 89 turbo with i think 27k that wasn't selling for 17k.

As rare as the options are, the car is not, and just like my 68 Firebird Convertible will not be considered a collectible.

10k is the "ballpark" number, convenience since the car is local (saved shipping) etc could sway the equation.

Three years ago I bought an 89 S2 with half the miles, as clean or cleaner, no paintwork ever (we dont know about the one matt is looking at), etc. from a dealer which automatically adds a premium and i paid top dollar 11500.

If you took a poll with the paramaters under 9k, 9-11k, over 11k, 80% would say 9-11.

I think around 10k is very reasonable, for both parties. That's what I'm going to shoot for, and I think it will be very possible. The car has never had any paint work, but it does have some damage to the right rear fender because of a recent parking lot hit-and-run. It doesn't look bad, and it will probably be under $500 for a top-notch body shop to fix. I'll check on the cam chain tensioner, but I'm 99% positive that it was changed. I'll hopefully be taking a look at it tonight or tomorrow. Thanks to everyone for all their help.

With the M030 option comes VERY expensive replacement shocks, when you need them. Something to keep in mind.

That said, I was close to buying Mike's '91, but a cheaper white '89 came up and I jumped on it ($8700). It was also from VA...near Charlottsville. I really like that color...only a '91 color from what I remember, right Mike?

Buy it!!
