Default 968 vs. 944?

So I see there are very many 944's here. I was wondering what you all thought about the 968's since I have just bought one. What kind of improvements were there since the 944? What kind of stuff are better on the 944 versus the 968? Just trying to get as much info on my 968 as possible. Thanks,
Chad

the difference is that 968's suck.... hehe, sharp car...

umm.. you can change your clutch w/o removing the tranny ( we cant' )

you have a real porsche gearbox... (gears are too short IMHO tho)

you have a 40hp advantage on the s2, but he has about a 150-250lbs advantage on you

O, and you have gloves to work on your car 'under' the hood instead of us having them under the rear mat.

Congrats! That's a beautiful car. The color is gorgeous.
Pretty much everything on the 968 was an upgrade from the 944. A lot of folks have mixed feelings on the styling but I personally love it.
The biggest commonality between the 944 and the 968 are the timing and balance belts and the cam chain tensioner. Be sure that yours were done recently. If not have them done immediately.

Good luck with the car and welcome to Rennlist.

It's best to think of the 968 as an evolution of the 944S2. Both have a similar 3.0 16 valve engine.

Major differences on 968, apart from the bodywork:

6 speed versus 5 speed, plus optional tiptronic (no auto option on S2)
VarioCam gives a few extra hp (240 versus 211)
exhaust system (beefier sounding than the S2)

There are probably a few more that I can't think of right now, and a host of very minor differences (exterior temp gauge, 180mph speedo etc). But to drive they are not actually that much different.

well thanks, I love the styling on the 968 also, and that's why I bought it. I actually got it off ebay a couple of weeks ago believe it or not. It should be here thursday or friday, so I'm very very excited. It'll be my first Porsche. I've only driven one other, a 944, and I thought it was fun to drive.
oh, and I love the rims. :-)

Oops, forgot the clutch and dual mass flywheel. Clutch is cheaper, flywheel more expensive.

Chad, you may not have the engine bay glove compartment - I believe it was deleted on the 94/95s. Bet you wish you knew that before you bought the car

In short, the 968 is the highest point of evolution for the 924/944 series. They got better every year and were the best at the end. Really nice car, I have to say I prefer 944 styling, but I still love the 968, especially the Club Sport.
You have a very nice looking car! GREAT colour!
Cheers and welcome.

Are those some kind of stripes on the carpet??

Looks very clean and you're not going to have to spend money on upgrading audio!

No, they're not stripes. That's the way they cleaned the interior. Kind of like grass at a baseball park. hehe. The guy I bought it from is the GM of a dealership in Arizona, so I assumed he had his guys clean it up all nice and good for the pictures and delivery.

Forged rods and pistons, under piston oil squirters, much lighter crankshaft, headlights are MUCH better. I think the S2's are probably the better buy right now, but if you drive a 968 people think you have a new model-the 944 variants are looking a little dated by now.
