Since you do live in NC I would use 15W-50 all year round and you should be fine. Best wishes - Jay Gratton

Compare the API labels on the back. Brand names mean nothing. BUT, this is only when comparing same weight and type(syn, semi, dino) to each other.

But the API label is the key info.

lol.
I just saw the forecast, and next week, we are hitting -40 for 2 or 3 nights (EEEK!!), with highs of only -30 (celcius) for those days as well. And here I am, with only an oil pan heater, no block heater (yet, I am going to look for one today!!!)
Up until now, the coldest we hit was -25, and recently, we have had overnight lows above the freezing point, with highs of 5 or 10 degrees for the last 2 weeks, this will be a big change!
One word: Move!
I think it dipped down to the high thrirties last month...once or twice.
Most (all?) clubs around here don't run in the summer though (too hot!) so we still only get nine months of driving per year. At the last NASA event, I saw a few snowbirds who travel the country going from event to event. In the summer they stay up north, and in the winter they bounce back and forth between here, Vegas, and SoCal.

Lol, I won't move, people in the states are too rude, when you say it's cold they say move!

Sorry, had to say that. Nah, despite the cold weather, I couldn't imagine living anywhere else.

Over 161,000 miles, Mobil 5W-30 year round mostly in Iowa. No leaks, no oil loss between changes. Will likely start using 0W-30 in winter from now on, and 10W-30 in summer.

M1 15/50 all the time. My oil consumption went down quite a bit in my old 951 when I switched to Mobil 1. Now w/ the S2 I don't notice much of a difference, I think S2's just get thirsty at lapping events.
You just have to swallow hard, switch to synthetic and find out how many leaks you have. Both my cars didn't start leaking at all.
As far as the cost goes, I change oil 2 or 3 times a year, and I figure it costs me $100 extra per year to run M1 over a good conventional oil. If there's ANY benefit, $100 a year is a good deal.

As far as cost goes, I figured I was changing a semi-syn every 3000 mi. I could switch to full syn which costs about twice as much, extend the drain interval to a not unrealistic 6000 mi and it costs me about an oil filter more.

I notice my car will burn about 1/2 qt per day at the track, basically nothing in normal driving.

Yep. As long as it has that donut, it's the same.

I have been using m1 full syn 10w - 30 all year round. No leaks but i have noticed a bit of consumption here lately. It smokes a little during cold starts. (valve seats maybe?)

smokes or steams? could be condensation.

I use fully-synthetic 5W-40 all year round (German Liqui-Moly). My engine already had new seals (the PO blew the timing belt) and I had no leak problems. New oil and filter each fall, and even that is a precaution - the oil looks clean as a whistle after a year, even though it's a daily driver. I say it's worth the cost.

Of course, the temperature here is 30 below to 30 above (C) - if your temperature never goes below -10C, 10W should do as well as 5W.
