Default DME confusion

Hi all. Just started tearing into a (new to me) '84 944. Came across something I think is odd. Previous owner state that they could not get it to run, and a replacement DME was included with the vehicle.

Had a chance to examine the interior better today, and found a Busch 0280000585 DME on the passenger seat. Odder still, there is a Programa (?) 585 DME plugged in. I was expecting a 015 unit for an early 944. Didn't think I'd find Saab parts!

Is this some undocumented upgrade of sorts? Or is it the primary reason that it would not start for the PO?

TIA,

James

That's unusual, any sign that the covers might have been removed? Maybe the covers have been swapped (why?) or it is somehow possible to mod a Saab ECU into a 944 ECU.
You might check the AFM voltage to see if it's early 12V or late 5v:

I'll check the AFM voltage as recommended. Funny part is, my previous daily was an E28, so older Motronic is not a new concept to me! The covers appear untouched, but I'll be able to investigate further tonight. I intend to pull one / both covers and verify the chip ID inside.

Can't say I've found anything out there that discusses modifying a Saab ECU for 944 use. Worst case, I'll verify pin outs to see if is even remotely compatible.

Thanks!

James

-- Edit --

Did more research. It appears that the Bosch 0280000585 ECU (or DME) was found on '90-'93 Saab 900T. Per the Bosch website, it is LH-2.4. My understanding is this is a Jetronic unit. (Also uses Hot Wire MAF.)

My early 944 (10/83) should be using a Bosch 0261200015, which Bosch lists as Motronic, ML1.2. (Not to be confused with M1.2 - different animal!) A few of the pinouts match between the two units, but nowhere even close enough to be "modified."

Looks like I'm now in the market for an 015 DME.
