Ive been through the metal/plastic argument with my 996 where a metal impeller can shift and render the entire crankcase useless. As Porsche still use plastic and only a few aftermarket use metal, I’m following the factory on this one.

I probably would do likewise if I was not addressing the walking-impeller problem to my own satisfaction.

BMW forums discuss the virtues and faults of metal, plastic, composite to death. The problem with some of the metal pumps is the bearings are made for plastic and the extra weight. At least that's what i read. We replaced the factory metal pump with a composite in my daughter's E46 at 88K a few months ago. Everything looked fine, but I didn't want to risk it. Plus, she (the one in my avatar who is now 15) was doing the labor while i "watched". Now she brags to the boys using words thet never heard before like idler pulley, and serpentine belt.

Porsche offers rebuilt water pumps? At the dealer I assume? Didn’t know about this.

I’ve been on a Zims-supplied bugdet pump for a while now. Pretty happy with it

Yes. My local dealer wants $260 for the kit (pn 951.106.921.x) but you can get it for $170 from Sonnen here: https://www.sonnenporscheoemparts.co...ump-951106921x
