Cam Adjustments on 944S

Is there room to adjust the cams on the 944S? I was thinking of trying to advance the intake and retard the exhaust for a few extra horses. If anybody has attempted this let me know...couldn't find anything in the archives. The manual basically says to adjust the timing using dial indicators to get everything lined up right. The timing adjustment per the factory manual for the 944S shows an infinately variable adjustment for timing (hence the need for a dial indicator on the cam lobe to determine proper adjustment). However, the manual for the regular 944 shows the use of different notches on the sprocket for adjustment (using TDC marks). I just need some clarification here on how to adjust the S and how much I can adjust it before expensive parts start hitting each other inside my cylinders. Thanks in advance.

I am finishing up the rebuild on my 88S and have the dial indicators set up now. I am told by someone who knows the S model pretty well that the dial inidcators will get you close to the optimal timing. He said after you get it set up to drive it then re-time the motor a degree or two either way. I am told you will find a sweet spot where the motor seems to come alive.
I can't telll you this from experience as this is my first rebuild of the S model. The conditions in Spokane, WA right now do not yield optimal driving conditions either so I'm taking my time on the job.

I've been trying to find people that use dial indicators set there cam timing. I like you guys already. Set your intake valve at 1.9 mm open at TDC. The best is between 1.9 and 1.95. However at 2.0 there is to much air backing up in the intake and confusing in coming air. !
1.9 is safe 1.95 is close to the edge of perf going out the window. Remember you will see the piston dwell at the top for a second. Split the distance and TDC should be considered th "middle." good luck yes I've done this alot.

Jim, Thanks for the information. I can definitely use the help of some experience here. At 1.90-1.95 where does this put the power band, High or low RPM?
Another question on the same topic is the set up of the dial indicators. The book says to set the valve dial indicator perpendicular to the valve but I am finding very little room due to the size of the cam lobe. As a result I have to off set the dial a bit to get around the cam. Any problem with this?
