Default Can someone tell me about the Thermo Vacuum sensor?

My thermo vac sensor is quite soiled. I havecleaned it a re glued the vaccum hose prongs however Im still unsure about its performance. My understanding is that at a certain coolant temp, the sensor connects the two vacuum hoses from the throttle body to the fuel vapor thingy. Is this a correct assumption?

You got it right man. At a designated temp, it opens to actuate the diaphram on the carbon canister. This purges excess vapor from the canister to the intake. Just for the record, I deleted mine and ran the vent hose from the tanks to the canister, no controls, no intake purge.

Would there be any harm in connecting the two vacuum hoses for constant purging?

It is set up to purge after the engine is up to temp( I beleive). If you bypass it, it may run too rich from excess fuel vapor, I doubt it would hurt anything except emissions testing.

Cyrus, anything in the vac/boost system (this included) is a possible leak, intake gaskets too. Any of the components are also suspect, bypass valve, cycling valve, etc, etc...

The intake, thus, ingested by the engine and burned off during combustion. On an early car, I think it goes to the bottom of the intake, about a 3/8' hose. Trace it from the control valave on the driver's side wheel well. There may be a vaccume venturi (the Y- peice that leaks all the time)that it goes to before the intake.

Andy you're a big help. So let me get this straight. The hose on this sensor/valve does not contain vacuum but fuel vapors. when the valve opens, fuel vapors travel into the throlle body via the vacuum crated by the downstroke of the engine? Then eaten up by the engine?

Just curious, If this is all vacuum based, how does it work on a turbo were the intake has pressure not vacuum?

Yes.

There is one for the crank case vapors too.

Wow, I didn't know that. All this time I thought it controlled vacuum. Where is the crankcase purge valve?
