Default 87 924S Transaxle noise

First time posting. I have used this site many many times. Little stumped on this one. My son and I are restoring his first car to join the Porsche family. When we were setting the TDC we noticed a clunk in the transaxle every time we made an engine rotation by hand. Looked inside inspection holes and can not see anything hitting. Every time the engine make a full rotation it sounds like something is spooling up then clunk clunk. Thanks

"Clunk in the Transmission..."
You could remove the inspection panel on the right of the transaxle and check the gears.
Get a magnet and poke around inside the transaxle to see if you have metal chips.

Have you repacked the CV joints? If you do, flip the right side axel to the left and keep the outside of each axel out. This changes the position of the ball bearings inside the joint. Have seals on hand.
Also check the rear shift rod coupler 2 bolts for tightness.

I have not replaced the cv joints yet. That will be next. Looking inside the trans axle I don't see anything and no metal shavings came out with the magnet. I can turn both rear wheels and don't hear anything. Only hear the noise when we turn the engine over. with the car running the clunking goes away if you hold the idle a little higher. when the car turns off and the rotation slows back to the noise.
It is an automatic and I plan on changing the clutch disk. Thanks for all the info so far.

The '87 924S automatic will use a "damper disc"

Thank you.
I've read and saw where people have replaced the damper disk with a spring clutch plate. I thought the damper disc was located at the bell housing then torque tube back to the trans axle. It seems like the noise is coming from the trans axle. We've laid down under the car at the engine and then back under the trans axle. It seems like the sound is coming out of the trans axle.
Converting to Manual has crossed my mind but my son wanted an automatic. Down the road we will see.
I think I may just drop it all and see what is going on. Car is up on stands. now is better than later.
thanks again for all the help.
