I remember reading on Perry951's website that one of his rollers were installed backwards by a P.O., leading to several bouts of bent valves. Take a look and see what you find.

Good luck.

Forget the pads, get a new tensioner. If this is what you meant, nevermind.

Also, have the valve guides checked. This would have nothing to do with the belt issue, but I'm willing the bet at least the exhaust guides are worn. How old are the oil cooler seals?

He priced a new tensioner at like $400, so I told him to just get new pads. I knew that didn't sound right, how much should one expect to pay for a new tensioner? How common is it for the tensioner itself to fail? It seems to me most failures are due to worn pads. They are checking the valve guides, and yes at least one of them is bad...the valve can be moved considerably. Don't know how old the oil cooler seals are, have no documentation on my car past my own.

I have seen cam chain tensioners on eBay for around $295, includes top and bottom pads. I don't know that there is one for sale right now though.

I've never heard of tensioner failure, just the pads.

I'd be wondering about mechanic # 2 as well. He thinks the teeth on the crank pulley might be too sharp? Huh?

You can only buy the upper pad not the lower. You need the entire tensioner assembly to get the lower pad.
Zims has the upper pad for $25 but the PO of my car said he got them from the dealer for $2 or $3.

I've heard that before, even my mechanic told me that at first...but then he said he found someone that sold both.
