Following quick on the heels of a special 40th-anniversary 911 model, Porsche announced in Detroit that it will produce a special edition of the Boxster S commemorating ?50 Years of the 550 Spyder.? The company is, of course, alluding to the 1950s sports racer, the 550 Spyder that inspired the look of the entire Boxster line. (And yes, that?s the car James Dean bought the farm in.) The company will make 1953 (cute, huh?) of the special-edition model that comes with gray-painted 18-inch wheels, the same silver paint that is applied to the Carrera GT supercar, a Cocoa leather interior, a 3.2-liter flat-six making 264 horsepower (six more than the regular Boxster S), a sportier suspension tune, and some exterior trim changes. Porsche claims from 0 to 62 mph in 5.7 seconds, and a top track speed of 165 mph. It goes on sale in March for $59,900.

it'd be cool if they made it RIPPIN' fast .. especially seeing as the Elise will be half the price and available around the same time appealing to similar people. Although .. a commemerative edition doesn't have to perform .. it just has to be limited.

dear porsche,
pretty please put in the 3.4 flat-6 from the early 996 like RUF does. if you only put it into 1953 boxsters, i promise it won't infringe on the 911's superiority.
sincerly,
guy who's gonna have to build one if you don't
