my 740 turbo wagon actually gets decent traction in snow, if you know how to drive it. and its much fun when you know how to drive it and break the traction. Saab is probably more capable as far as snow goes thoughh.

heh, yup. I've got an '81 240 Turbo. Yes, one of the first originals!. It's a great fun (kinda dangerous also) to drive, when the boost comes. It also has 40 % LSD, and that's why everytime it looses grip, the rear goes first sideways, and then asks question

btw, S2Nut, your sign is very macho

There is really only one logical choice here...

The volvo 940turbo...

I dunno who said there curb weight was 4700lbs but there real curb weight is only 3067lbs. The volvo engine is amazeing and is prolly my favorite engine ever made anywere in the world... The ammount of abuse this engine can take is beyond anything I have ever seen.. (Example Volvo4lifes 760turbo that is so poorly treated has hit 260,000) Also whoever said they eat gas is way off they get better gas mileage then most cars, I would say from 22-26 depending on conditions..

Hi, I don't know, how much do you guys think is much,
but old Volvos are thirsty! Of course gas is as cheap for you guys as seawater is for us Euro guys but still..
Both of our Volvos, (240 Turbo, 740 wagon) drink more than my 951, even when I just a bit with my 951..

Never the less, the are firm and safe cars, but so are Saab's.
I'd say, you can't go wrong here!
It's like choosing between an S2 or 951 for a daily driver.
OK, let's not start that ..

Consider the saab 9000. Thats a bit closer to the volvo in size. Yes the 900 is small. And the only way I would get a 900 or 9-3 is if it were turbo and convertable. If i am giving up that much space and taking a fwd I need something in return like an open roof!

Dependability is going to be an issue with either being that they are older cars. I might consider paying a bit more and getting an older model Maxima. I have had 2 and they are rock solid with the 3.0 liter engine.

I'd go for the Volvo, but then Iii'm raised with them in the family.

Dad has had his 740 turbo for 13 years and 300.000 km's without a single problem. Still on the original clutch!

If you decide to take the Saab be prepared for replacing the gearbox, that is the only real weak part of the car and pretty much typical for Saab.

Default Volvo's Rule Saab's Drool

The 940T is the only way to go. You'll never find an easier car to work on except a NA Volvo or a VW bug. The Saab is one bassackwards machine. They are a true nightmare to work on. Owing a 951 is enough head ache for one person. I've owned 6 Volvos over the last 8 years 240’s, 740’s, 740T’s and 2 years ago I got a 940T. I wanted one for years.

It was a great daily driver, a little thirsty, but that can be attributed to my driving style. I’ve never a had to replace anything on the Volvo’s other then head gasket, a/c compressor, brake pads, rotors, shocks, oil seals and basic tune up stuff. All of my Volvos have had over 100k miles. They are very comfortable and are quick little sleepers.

This pass was made at 12psi (stock is 5 or 6 psi, I've cranked the boost on every turbo Volvo I've owned, logged many miles with no probs)

I sold the 940 this summer, after I bought the '86 951 and started using it for my daily driver. The ’86 is scheduled to be sold in the next week, so once again I bought another Volvo for daily use. I picked up a '97 960 last week.

I have had some Saabs for daily drivers and still have... Good cars...
Still if you are a DIY type of person, then maybe the Volvo is a better choice. No special tools required U C, although the Saab is quite simple too.
By the way, that Volvo isn't that quick. But of course the tank has a tank engine = can be tuned...

Saab is better in:
- The looks
- Fuel mileage
- Performance

Volvo is better in:
- No rust
- Tank engine

looks !?! no way, a volvo looks much better than a saab any day of the week, i dont care if its a viggen... as for saab vs volvo, my 240 averaged around 25 mpg highway and anywhere between 20-22 city, as for the 760 well.. thats a different story but only because i floor it everywhere i go.. i'd say definately go for the 940 turbo, you can't go wrong with it, it has the updated b230FT 90+ manifold, and in 90 the B230 moved to a better engine design with stouter connecting rods sooo more boost is indeed capable.. if you feel the urge. not to mention updated interior and looks, styling wise volvo is where its at. quickness wise stock for a 940 realistically you should see low 16's out of it STOCK, thats pretty quick for a daily driver... k im done

I owned 2 Saab 900 cars for a few years - a 91 900 with 110K and a 92 900S with 100K. Great cars in bad weather.

I do not recommend ever getting a Saab of that vintage with an automatic transmission. They are very expensive to repair, as I know too well.

go saab slob saab

gut it gut gut gut it, turbocharge it, racing slicks

lol, i dont know what model youre talking about

but guy here in MT, has one, 4 door, not that big of a car, front wheel driver, engine management to 315 hp, gutted to the gills, slicks
fast time of day ALL THE TIME

prolly no relevance to your question, just odd to see a 4 door slob kick the crap out of all of us (P-cars, zo6 vettes, dedicated camaros, mustangs, miatas, datsuns, ect ect)

i think it was a 900 aero S

There was a test for "winter cars" in an automotive magazine some 15 years ago here in Finland. It said this one thing, which just came in to my mind... "The Saab is excellent in advancing in DEEP SNOW..."
So true... :-)
No wonder it was called as "a tractor" up here!

About the styling and looks: Go and sit inside a Saab and go and sit inside a Volvo... Then compare... I think the Saab will win... No matter what model.

Didn't Volvo claim to have a wagon that can beat the 951 back in 88????? Buy the damn Volvo, beat the **** out of it, throw the broken parts in a box with a picture of your 951 and that old Volvo ad and ship it back to Sweden.
