Default Front wheel bearings

The 944 front hubs are aluminum..If you ever have to change out the bearing races in your 944 front hub, they are in the hub very tight...See Van's U tube video on how he does it..It looks verrry easy to do, once he has the hubs heated up a bit. AND it keeps the inside of the hub nice and not all scarred up from a punch ruining the race to hub fit. Great video as always, VAN..BIG SHOUT OUT AND WELL DESERVED!!

I've done two sets of front hubs now. The first ones were pretty tough to get the races out, and I bent a few punches doing it. The second time, I used a big chisel and heated them up first. Popped out in 5 hits.

I used a press to put them back in the second time. Much easier.

My wife thinks I’m weird for storing 944 bearing races in a ziplock bag in the freezer.

So has anyone had any testimony regarding the brand of bearings and race,

either pro or con ?

the reason I bring this up is because the Italian maker of those in one of my '84s was burned blue at around the 20,000 mile mark and getting very rough and a bit noisy.
The car had maybe 10 track days on it, and predominantly mostly right hand turns, placing more load on the left front corner.
The original bearings were made by the Italian manufacturer F.A.G. and always had plenty of grease. The car was well maintained and never in water.
They just wore out prematurely.

What has been fellow 944 owner's experiences ?

MGJ, Timken, National, or SKF are some of the best bearings you can buy. I also like Mobil 1 grease.

personal preference is SKF but *** will do if skf is unavailable.

the oven heated to 250-260F works fine on removal or installation. i make sure race is 100% seated with a press.
