83 944 Radiator questions
Hi guys. I think the radiator is sound other than a snapped fitting. Top left. Some sort of overflow/bleed line maybe? Runs back to the reservoir neck. Can I plug this and live without it? This is going to be a track car so no street driving worries. Also curious about the sensor below it. Thermofan? I'm thinking just running the fan(s) on a switch so just ignore it? On the other hand if it works what the hell. I imagine there is a test protocol somewhere. Anyone know off-hand? *I should add that before tearing into it I got the motor good and hot - by the temp gauge anyway - and the fans never turned on. Knowing what I was planning I did not bother chasing it down.

My guess is that radiator is ancient. For a track car you need maximum reliability, so I'd replace the radiator with a new model for the 951, swapping out the bottom support and hoses to make it work. If you have the original three bladed fans you'll want to ditch those as well and pick up the later style six blade fans. Between the two you'll greatly increase the capacity and reliability of the cooling system.

Thanks tempest. If I were to do anything other than stock 944 NA I would go full race equipment.Lindsey sells a race piece for $600. I imagine there are other options. I just want to buy time and put my money into other areas for now. It will be converted eventually and if this rad proves unusable then eventually becomes right now.
So the question remains - Can I run without the overflow/bleed, whatever the little fitting top left is?

If you're going to race the car i would put a manual switch for the fan ... i almost toasted my car on pit lane during a red flag situation when the fans didn't
work due to a bad thermoswitch ... i had to pull out after i saw the temp gauge going over 220 degrees and rising !

It is a screw-in piece. Never thought to look for one. Awesome - thank you. Just gotta ease the busted off part out. And absolutely agree on manually-switched fans - that was probably gonna happen anyway. I'm just gonna leave the sensor in there rather than tempting fate with removal and plugging.

Just make sure you use heavy enough gauge wiring with a good ground and put an in line fuse as well ( used a 30A which are readily available in trailer and RV shops ) , i left the last switch in the hole after going through two replacements !

Well now that's good info. Thank you. Condenser is already out. I'm getting the delete kit when I get the water pump/timing belt kit - do it all together. I'm thinking the Porsche delete bracket from my reading here. Does that also move the alternator down like the "racing" kits?
