In 1995 my 944 was totaled and since then I've owned a '78 SC Targa. I am considering buying a 2 owner 1988 944 with about 60k mi. The bad news--broken timing belt. The "good news"--$1200. I know I'm looking at around $2-$2500 for the repair including replacing the water pump & thermostat.
My questions are:
1) what other damage might I look for in the motor?
2) Is it possible to replace the motor with one from a 968?
3) what needs to be done if the swap is possible?
I do need to add that this car is immaculate. Please reply direct. Thanks in advance.

If you can do the job yourself excepting the valve grind you can keep it below a thousand. Just rebuild the stock engine and drive it awhile. Then think about the engine swap.
