Default Want a 944?

I have been wanting to get a 944 ever since I saw one as a kid. I am only 17 now, but in about a year I would like to get a 944. I am having 2 problems one of them is I can't decide if getting a 944S or S/2 is really worth it over an 8 valve? I am also having a problem with insurance. I was wondering what some of the other younger members on this board pay and where they get it from? My dad has a 944 automatic so I know a lot about the car not so much about matience but the specs and what not.

In my opinion, the S is not that much better of a car, but the S2 on the other hand is. Go for an S2 if you can afford it. It's well worth it.

I pay 1700 a year, no collision. Also no tickets/accidents, on record at least. I think the company is Commerce insurance. I'm 18

Good luck in your hunt!

1350/year, perfect record, good student discount, show-car/pleasure-car status (less than 5000 miles per year)
The S2 is better than the S, but 16 valve in general is much cooler since they make that awesome mechanical whine. Ive had people say how great my turbo sounds...and then not understand what they just heard when they realize its not turbo! I love it! Dont get one with mod intentions, its not gonna happen. You need a turbo to mod anything at best. Custom 16valve turbo is the ticket, but that costs big dollar! The standard 944 is lighter, so if you got a 2.7 liter it wouldnt feel so bad in comparison.

lol wow do you guys DRIVE your porsches?how do you have no tickets?!?

i'm 18 and the thing to do, is go through your parents, have your pernts put the car on their plan and have them write you in as a occational driver. Also sign a thing that says you CANT drive the other cars on the plan, it'll make it cheaper, i think i pay around 900 to put it on the plan and another 500 for me to be on the plan...

oh yea, um 3 tickets, about 8 written warnings and no accidents(knock on wood)on record, however i did spin out when i first got the car(flooring it in 3rd into an exit ramp..back end came around and bent one of my wheels on the curb, i was really lucky, good thing i didn't get the turbo at first huh?

How much more is the matience on an S or S2? I know the cam chain needs to be changed every so often. Also this 944 which ever one I get will be my daily driver. So just keep that in mind.

If you don't buy a car like Jonas with perfect records and is up to date on everything. Expect to dump $1500 - $2500+ after you buy it. This counts for an S/S2 and the 8V.

The cam chain AND tensioner is the added expense of the 16V cars. Unless you do valve guides, then you will have 8 more to do as well.

What do the tensioners run these days? $300 or so? I'm not sure. The chain is cheap.
i'd guess $600 or so for the chain/tensioner job at $75 or so an hour. Mine was associated with stripped cams/valve guides so I don't recall what just the chain combo was. So don't flame me if I'm way off. ok?

When I bought my 944S in 1996 I was 17 paying $240 a month in full coverage. Now I pay a whopping $62.00 for 5 cars. Its good to have a near perfect record.

I could have bought another 944 with the money I spent in 3 years on insurance.. full coverage through progressive, multi-car discount, no accidents, 2700 a year, then 2500, now 2000..
