150,000 Miles, 1 DE, 4 Autocrosses and driven hard daily. I am using Motul 15W50 Synthetic Oil. Cylinder head has never been off. Original Turbo, burns little to no oil.

I think i did them on my car when it had 74k because i was having the motor mounts changed so i might as well change the oil pan gasket, so i might as well change the rod bearings, so i might as well change the rings, so i might as well make it really nice for the thiefs. schmuck i am.

This is my first bitter post!!! thanks for reminding me of the money i pissed away pal.

you were at the autocrosses. i would say no track time, but after finding out the PO replaced the head gasket, no guarantees on anything.

I've had the car for 3 years now. Purchased with about 130k showing and I'm now at 175k. There have been numerous auto-x events, but no DE yet. I change the oil at about every 3-5k miles and use dino 20W50 Valvoline racing. I also give in to the boost crack pipe about every time I drive the car too, so it gets driven quite hard compared to the wife's car. No rod bearing failure yet but I plan on changing them as a preventative measure this summer. Oil pressure is 5bar at cold idle, 3bar at hot idle. It stays at 5bar while driving, hot or cold.

Owned Baby for for over 13 years. She has 145K hard miles 2 DE events. I use 20-50 Castrol changed between 3-5K. No bearing issues. I use one quart every 3k to 5k depending on type of driving. She just developed a front oil main seal leak otherwise she's great.

No rod bearing failures after 36 track days on fresh rebuild ( seldom below 4000 rpm's). Lightened knife edged non cross drilled crank, 3 qt accusump, Kiss oil cooler, external air/oil separator and late style sump. 375rwhp.

Rod bearings will be replaced this winter as scheduled maintenance.

Hey All;

84 944, purchased at 49k miles in 1989. Speedo has been broken again, this time for 5 years. Who needs it? Car is slow anyway.

Estimated 150k miles total. Probably 20-30k of that track miles. Tracked since 1990. Solely a track car for the last 4 years. Mobil 1 15w50. Mechanical gauge says 60-70psi at speed, no lower than 20 at idle coming into the pits after a run. Burns about 1/2 to 1 pint per day in the last year or so.

No rod problems, no head gasket, no oil pan, no rack, just periferals. Car is pushed harder and harder each year as the upgrades add up to more cornering speed. This thing is a ROCK!

As an asside, the majority of rod bearing failures on track come from sustained high RPM, high G load cornering. It is theorized that cavitation of the oil away from the pickup, and perhaps even away from the #2 bearing inside the crank/bearing oil passages in the block is the cause for this failure. Street driving and "normal" autocrossing will not cause this.

Other rod failures are probably more anomolous and can be attributed to just plain chance.

115K miles, no problems at all. Rod bearings were replaced @ 110K when the oil pan was off to replace a leaky gasket. Car has been autoXed a few times, but hasn't seen any track time.

My '84's at about 195,000 KM (about 121,000 miles) and no rod bearing failure yet, but there is a slight, low-tone knock from the engine when it's running. The mech thinks it's rod bearings but wants to check the oil and do some more diagnostics before committing.

I've been toying with the idea of changing them myself (it sounds like a costly affair) but with the noise they're making I'm a little worried that the crank might need resurfacing or similar once I'm in there and that would be beyond my tools, time, and space. I'll most likely take it to someone to do.

The car's in pretty good shape for it's age. I did 4 or 5 auto xs last year and sometimes it gets run hard but mostly I take care of it when driving. I've had it for 5 and a half years but don't know what the PO's style was. From all indications it was babied before I got my dirty hands on it .

Too paranoid about this kind of failure. I replaced them when the oil pan gasket was replaced at 158K.

Who had the failure with stock oil cooling and cross-drilled crank?? I'd like to hear the history of the engine.

My car has about 122,000 miles on it. As far as I know it has only been auto crossed by me a couple of times.

No problems with rod bearings. Car was stolen (prior to my ownership) and taken for a very rough joy ride. There is a huge dent/mangling of the oil pan louvers from where the car landed on a rock? and cracked the engine carrier. The oil pan doesn't even leak! However, I'm doing rod bearings in two days and will post pics...
I wouldn't mind seeing a step-by-step photo journal of the whole procedure

Failed at my first DE while a college student back in 2000. Origonal bottom end af far as I know, dyno and synthetic blend in it's history, oil sluged and nasty for some unknown reason.

Spun it having fun in Oak Tree and the Carosel at Nelson's Ledges. Yup I was broke and even more broke afterwards...

And yes, I am STILL a Track Junky after that first DE expierience.

Now I have the updated pan and baffles, modified sump with trap door and collared pickup with a cross drilled forged turbo crank... just awaiting some more abuse!
