Sideways. I hit the curb/guardrail with the wheel slightly turned, it hit the face of the wheel mostly i think.

The control arm was magles badly, it was twisted and bent at the rear mount point.

You could have blown the seals. Check the other side and see if it has as much fluid on it.

On working with sheet metal. If you use a hammer and a dolly you cause the sheet metal to "grow". Use a torch to heat an area red hot and put a wet rag on it to quickly cool it to cause it to shrink.

Other shock is bone dry. Looks like I need to replace the inserts. My plan was too replace both of them, so things would be even, but do you think it is neccesary if the other insert is fine and only 20 months old?

If you can afford it replace both. If not get the same as the good side.
