Default tps

i have the haynes manual and im about to check my tps tomorrow. i am wondering: to check with a voltmeter, is it okay that this thing isnt plugged in, or attached to the rest of the car? does the voltmeter send the power through the tps to get a signal? since its on the bottom of the throttle body, i was just curious, i dont really know anything electronic.

Just a couple of switches inside the black plastic box. You should be able to hear them click as the throttle is returned to idle or at the wide open position. The adjustment is to have it click just as it closes.

Sometimes the switches become gummed up and require a bit of electrical contact spray.

If you can hold the ohm meter connections to the pins on the switch you will see it change state as it clicks. Without the engine running of course.

well, its a new tps that i put on without really adjusting it. i just set it where the old one was set. i was told my other problem was auxiliary air valve. but it turns out that i guess its the tps "bottomed out" making my car buck and engine brake. it also idles from 1400 to 800 when it is warm. the other symptom i had(that cleared up) was the idle would jump to 1800 and stay there until the car completely cooled down again. all i did to fix this problem, was put the new tps on.

There's no variable-voltage output in a 944NA. There's only a closed and fully-open switch. The issue with the closed switch is that if you have it click closed too early when you're letting off the gas, the DME will drop into the idle map too soon and you'll get insufficient fuel and the car will buck and die. The click should be set so that when you BARELY open the throttle, the click occurs. Then as you close the throttle, the click occurs only at the very, very end.

You have to love "Office Space". That has to be one of my favorite movies.
