Vintage GArage queen you need? 930, 951 with $15K saved up for maintanance and bolt-ons, 3rd gen Rx-7(one of the best cars i've driven), whole buncha POrsches in that price range.
A car that you can drive into friggin pond and it'll still be running with pocket change maintanance: S2000, Rx-8, 350Z, G35 6MT, SUpra TT, Boxters.
I'm also looking to buy a sub 30K weekend/fun car in the next 3 years and i'm torn between S2K, 930, FD and a very nice 951S. They all have their quirks and it's hard to choose if you don't drive them all. And they all have a very different feel to them. For me the 944 series are not CRAZY enough compared to a 911 race car feel and FD is like a go kart with a rocket engine that has telepathic driver control.
WRX and EVO8 are uber driver machines which can give any car a run for its money. If you have an opportunity to buy a new one GET IT!! I drove both and my oh my, a perfect drivers car with top performance everywhere for your buck! the only problem is buying these cars used... they'll probably have the isht kicked out of them which can lead to many problems in the long run.
Tough choice, drive all of them and decide which one is right for you
BTW, the turbo Miata is coming out too
or how about a Used low mileage Mcoupe with an S54 engine (01-02 model). That is a very rare car that will keep it's value just like the 930.

91-93 NSX. If you are interested, go to www.nsxprime.com and check the FAQ. You won't be dissappointed. Not a day goes by that mine doesn't make me smile, driving or just looking at it.....

Don't waste your money on garbage, and find something thats got power.
I say either go with a S4, or a FD. You can find alot of FD's in the $10-15k range because the market isnt so great for them as well. The S4 would be a pretty hot car to own, a very hot car

Well I am going to recommend advice I'll eat myself. Best way to go with two cars because no single vehicle will satisfy everything. For serious sporting I'd get a 951, got it
For all around all weather reliable transportation I'd get the Tacoma TRD with super cab. Currently drive a '96 4Runner at 140k running like it just arrived from the factory.

An E46 328ci with decent mileage.
I do all the work on our E46 323i (sport) and that car is a dream to work on. Really, I wouldn't have thought a car with six computers and more smart chips than my brain can keep track of would be even possible to work on...
The BMW is a pleasant change of pace to work on. However, it's definately not cheaper than the 944 to get parts for, and it seems to eat parts like it's a growing boy. Front control arms are a snap, as are brakes, rotors, and just about all mechanicals EXCEPT steering related components.
The O2 sensors couldn't have been easier, plugs are run-of-the-mill for a new car, filters are positioned so that a chimp could change them out.
All in all - the 328ci (much more performance in the same or similar chassis to the 323i sport) - would be my pick, no looking back.
And you "might" be able to get one with a wee bit of factory warranty left on it.
JUST as an example of the body style and specs for price ratio...

I feel quite strongly in favor of the BMW mechanicals - so if you have any questions, please ask!
