Transaxle refresh checklist - without splitting case
Just snagged a S2 gearbox and I'd like to freshen it up and perform maintenance before installation. However I don't want to split the case, or remove the 5th gear housing part - the trans is healthy internally.
So far here is the to-do list:
- Obviously new gear oil
- New drain/fill plugs
- Diff output flange seals
- Input shaft seal
- Shift selector stub seal
Is there any other job that's easy and worthwhile doing in addition to these? Or any warnings about any of the seals above? (special equipment needed, etc). Seems like routine stuff.

Clean the magnets-pull the sideplate and there is a magnet in the rear cover as well.so...you might have to change that gasket as well..Good luck! When you pull the sideplate, you can inspect the R&P for damage..hopefully it's in good shape.

I recommend the following:
- Drain the fluid
- Degrease the transmission
- Replace output shaft seals
- Replace input shaft seal
- Remove selector rod. Replace selector rod seal and cover paper gasket. Re-seal selector rod detent.
- Open side cover and clean magnet. Inspect ring and pinion and look for any signs of rust on the visible part of the input shaft. Inspect diff carrier bearing inner and outer race. Re-seal side cover.

Thanks! Any "gotchas" for the shifter shaft job? I'll read the FSM but sometimes there are details not obvious to a layman like myself. My main concern would be removing the shaft, and not being able to install it because something doesn't line up internally or some small important clip or spring fell into the innards. Also - not familiar with the rod detect seal. Is that one of the bolts on top? One looks like it has a seal under it. Sorry for the noob questions, I've always considered anything except basic transaxle work to be mostly out of my DIY league.

I used to do it myself and used engine degreaser, parts brush and power washer.....but the local car wash detailer does it better than me for a very affordable price so I take all transmissions to him.

Interested in the style of car wash detailer to look for that could do that. I have zero interest in doing it myself if having someone else do it comes in at the right price.

Mine is pretty caked up with crap. I'm also building a linkage arm from a few heim joints and threaded rod, and fitting my XSchop SSK to it off my current NA trans.

Hi Michael.
I have my 5r transaxle on my engine stand now and bought some MEK fron home depot to use to clean it. I plan to wheel it outside and brush it on then use a wire brush to clean it up. I found a nice set if seals for the transaxle from wrightward racing as well as a porsche gasket set for more. Complete reseal kit about 40 to 70 dollars.

So after the degreasing (stage1) you might want to clean off all the oxide encrustations on the case. Lotsa Dremel work and several wire brushes will be needed. Then you can either clear coat or paint As desired.😊
