I think someone raced one of those vans at the Grassroots Motorsports Challenge a couple years ago. What a riot.

I'd bet my old Aerostar would give you a good run! I beat the hell out of it, never would die. I shifted it manually all the time. A true drift racer! Ahhh, the good ole days, lol.

(Trying desperately to steer this thread back to some sensible topic)

I think the biggest problem with speed/young age/Porsche 944's these days is this:
Young kid + fast car + no $$ = driving fast on the street.

You need a fair amount of $$ to play in the proper venue with our cars. If you want to play on the track, it's gonna cost anywhere between $100 to $200 per day, and that's track fees alone! Add to that travel/hotel expenses, tire & gas costs, food costs...etc. and it adds up real quick.

The young'ins don't have that kinda money lying around, so they do what they feel is the cheaper alternative: drive fast on the streets.

I'm not saying that I have unlimited amounts of money to waste on my car, but I do have a 'track budget' that I am able to use. Helps to have a steady income (both my wife and I), stable job, and no kids!

So, as much as they don't want to hear this, the young folks are just going to have to wait their turn.

Now, where's my metamusil?!?

Sometimes I like to go to the mall dressed as Hazmatt worker. It makes the checkout lines much shorter this time of year.

I got to wear a couple of hazmat suits as part of my HAZWOPER training two summers ago. They had us walking around outside and everything. Unfortunately, I made a huge tactical error on my part. It was July. I was the third person to don the suit. I wore shorts...

i am 17 and i will admit that most (id say about 98%) kids my age shouldnt be anywhere near a 951. my first car was a 2000 civic si and i am really glad i started off with something reasonable. i learned how to drive it pretty well at the local autox's and eventually got my parents to feel comfortable with me having a fast car. im not going to say that i havent done anything illegal in it because that would be a damned lie. However, if i am going to speed or hit br's, i make sure that its safe to do so. Ive never done a top speed run and i really dont feel the need to, however, i will occasionally take it up to around 120-130 for a sprint if the road is open and the conditions are good.

it's not about AGE it's about EXPERIENCE.

It's also about MATURITY.

I know some 28 year olds that I would NOT let drive my car. I also know a pair of 17 year olds who have more track experience than me.

To correct Zoltan's equation:

person of any age + immaturity + any car = street racing / unsafe excessive speeding

also

street racing / excessive speeding + inexperience = crash

also

street racing and unsafe excessive speeding = STUPID (duh)

That said, regardless of age, any who buys a modern SPORTS CAR isn't going to be driving like a grandma, regardless of thier age. (even balding mid-life crisis males in their vettes are prone to getting tickets!)

You beat me to that one. From the title of the topic I thought that was what it was about anyway.

Rich,
Generally, maturity comes with age: you dont' see too many white-haired, 50+ year olds street racing their Bling! Bling! Honduhs.

Sure, there are responsible 17 year olds, but generally speaking, age and maturity go hand in hand.

And the $$ factor is even more evident: most 17 year olds can't afford to play on the track.
