I think one of the things about owning one of these cars is understanding that they are getting older and things will fail.
You may not be happy about it but you have to just accept it as the price we pay for cars are very rewarding to drive.
My exhaust gave up on life yesterday, even after just doing new Koni's, Ball joints, coolant tank (So white!) and what not...
I looked at the exhaust and just thought, oh well, who needs to eat anyways
Bad timing since I am taking the girlfriend to California for 10 days and the effin holidays!
Good thing I have my fellow rennlisters to get parts from!

Not selling the car--I actually can't afford to sell it and buy another car! D'oh!
Don't know if it's the switch though...wouldn't it cause a failure light to pop on if there was a short or dead switch?? I would hate to replace the motor (thanks again George...I owe you!) if I need the switch.
Geez, Marc...a Turbo exhaust is pricier than an NA, right?

pull the relay, tehn turn the wipers to a setting where they should constantly be on (push the stalk up). If they turn on, it's the relay, if not, it's the motor.
I had the opposite problem that my wipers were on intermittent all the time when they are off. I pulled the relay and the wipers still work, just not on the intermittent setting.

Andy , just be careful when you mess with the stalk if you have to replace it , disarm the airbag , then it is relatively easy to fix. The key when you do is the contactor ring in the steering wheel.

I tried the wipers minus the relay, and...nothing. So, it must be my motor. I think I'll bring it to a mechanic...unless replacing the motor is very straight-forward.
George...you even said it's a PITA, right?

Andy, I removed mine to clean & re-grease while I was replacing the plastic hvac cover at the base of the windshield. It's easy to get out but you remove the hvac fan assembly first which is easy also. The motor has some contacts in there that could get grease on them and could lead to problems. I'd pull the motor and hot wire it first. Then you'll know for sure. I imagine a mechanic would charge a fortune for this. Good luck.

If it's easy to get out, and easy to remove the HVAC fan...where's the expensive (hard) part??
So near, and yet so far! Hope it doesn't rain for a while!

A quick how-to. If I left off anything, please add.
1)remove plastic cover over hvac assembly.
2)remove bolts around the perimeter of the hvac fan assembly & un-do the vac hoses to the fresh air flaps. Unplug wire to fan motor. Lift off the assembly. may want to get new butyl tape to reseal the housing while it's off.
3)remove wiper arm bolts & lift off wiper arms. remove bolts at the base of wiper arm drive shafts.
4) remove wiper assembly bolts which hold it to the car body. i think 3 exist and one is hidden up under if i remember correctly.
5)pull out assembly and unplug wire connector from motor.
6)and in the finest of Haynes traditions.....install is the reverse of removal.
