Default Coolant Smell on Startup

88 944S

I get a coolant smell for about 1 min after startup. I just replaced upper radiator hose, hose from pipe to front water neck, and hoses from water pipe to heater valve and valve to pump. Started after replacing these.

No noticeable leaks. Coolant level does not drop. No mixing in oil. No white smoke at exhaust. Idles normal. No lose of power through RPM range. No coolant smell in cabin. Proper oil pressure.

I have re-checked tightness of clamps.

Thoughts?

I'd pressure check the system. Small seeping leaks can take forever to reveal themselves in the wild but become obvious under 15psi of pressure...

Could it be from your cabin HVAC heat exchanger leaking? I used to get this on my car.

Do you still have the original coolant expansion tank? If yes, they begin to fail at this age by hairline stress cracks that develop in the plastic. Under pressure, droplets of coolant are forced thru the cracks and they can evaporate before before becoming noticeable but you will smell the coolant. Extra tricky when the cracks are on the tank underside and not the top.
