Default Cutting Keys, not so simple anymore..

I've been givin one of those steel Porsche keyblanks for the plastic Porsche keyhead. I'm having trouble getting the key cut. I've been to several locksmiths, including those at lowes, and home depot, but they all say the same thing. They can't cut it because it's steel and it'll mess up their equipment. Anybody know how much the dealer charges to get this key cut? Thanks.

i don't think the dealer can cut it. When I picked up my blank key, the parts person told me to take it to a specialty locksmith, who has special keycutters for the german steel.

Canadian Tire, Lowes, Home Depot, are all crap.

Look in the phone book for specialty locksmiths!

I went to a locksmith and told him it was just like a VW key and he cut it in 3 minutes for me. I also tried Lowes and they said they couldn't do it because they didn't sell the keys, and if they messed it up they'd be liable. I told them I'd take the chance, as it is all of $2 for a blank 944 key...

They still wouldn't do it. Ended up at your basic small time locksmith.

Don't trust the $7 per hour Lowe's rookie. Go to an experienced locksmith.

yes use a locksmith with one of the those old manual machines, all the big chain hardware stores have this auto-key cutting machine that uses lasers to track the teeth, the old ones float over the teeth and mimic the actual sequence.

I too had problems getting my key cut. Found a locksmith who's shop was in the back of a bar. Called him and after asking me a hundred questions about the key and the car told me he would meet me about 7. Told me to meet him at Skooters pub and hung up. didn't know his shop was at pub and thought he was messing me. Called back and lady answered "Skooters pub" Told her I wanted to speak to the Dick who was f$#@ing with me. Told me there is no dick there. Told her going to come down and kick his *** (I dont' do that to anybody). She got all angry. I told her if she didn't put him on I would come down and kick her *** too. Told her some guy there was messing with me and was pretending to be a locksmith. She siad "Oh yeah that's the owner. He has a locksmith shop in the back of HIS bar!!!!!

Don't think I have ever been so embarrassed. Started apologizing up down and sideways. Explained that I don't kick anybody's *** and I was being tough because i felt i was being messed with. She was a good sport and told me I have a temper like her. Also promised not to tell owner.

Anyway, hesitantly I went. He was the nicest guy in the world and cut key no problem. Only charged me 2 dollars. Not a word was mentioned and I escaped with my newly cut key.

Remember: It's not who you know...It's just where there shop is.

I went to a bunch of places here and nobody could cut 'em. They all have those fancy new machines that only cut keys for the blanks they sell. I heard every excuse in the book over it too. Finally had one guy tell me a good place to go that had an old fashioned key machine.

Ace Hardware. I have bought several little items for my car there Needed a little piece of a hose and got it for free. Got the keys done for like $1 each or something. Great people and place.

Yep.....one and the same! Have a couple of those here locally and it's worked out great for me to get my blanks done. I've actually gotten one more that I need to go have done as well....which will give me my daily key, my master key and 3 spares....hopefully that will do me for a while

Some VW blanks have the same dimensions. If you want to cut a Porsche blank to put in a lit head, Buy the V-dub one that matches up, and just ask them to cut it on the special one you brought. I have a 944 spare that was cut from a V-dub blank I got at ACE hardware. Works like the original.

When I went to cut mine I went to a very reputable shop around here and they told me they wouldn't be liable if they screwed up, they also asked me for a copy of the car's registration, as if I was going to get a ~20$ key cut for a stolen car. I ended up going to a corner hardware store and the guy got the key made without problem. Cost me about 3 bucks.

OK, I did the round robin with all of the hardware stores and such. I ran into the Porsche dealer parts manager @ O'Daniel's in Fort Wayne this spring on our annual tech session for the Michiana PCA chapter. He said that all he needed was a copy of our titles and he could cut it himself and would throw in the key blank that you are talking about for $30.

Best deal I've found yet.
