Default 951 vs Audi a4??

I've got a relative who likes to brag about his audi, I believe its a 98, but know its a 2.8, FWD, tiptronic. Anyway, we'll get into a car discussion and at some point he'll throw in how his Audi could run circles around my 944. Being that its a NA and automatic at that, of course. However I've found a local 951 for sale, 90k miles, good service records, and a full 3" exhaust into Borla's. Not chipped or anything else though. Oh, and his previous mechanic said he believes it has an aftermarket wastegate, not positive about that though. If all goes according to plan, I should have it here in a couple weeks. SO, as is, obviously not from a standing start, I should easily be able to lay waste to the audi, correct? I mean, the car is only making what, 190 hp? Basically I'm wondering if theres any area that the A4 could possibly present any trouble in. If not, I'm hoping to finally get him to shut up, .

By the way, in case its not obvious, I'm psyched about possibly getting a 944 turbo. I talked to the guy who has it for about 20 minutes today, really good guy, and he seems honest, telling me in detail whats been done to the car. Even saying that if his wasn't for me, that he has a neighbor 2 houses down with an 86 turbo that I could probably get for extremely cheap, as it hasn't been touched for awhile. Anyway, all belts, etc have been changed, new water pump, basically anything that could go wrong, has been replaced within 400 miles. New tires, rear suspension, even little, could be irritating things, such as window motors! Plus he's open to negotiation and his asking price is all ready a steal, if its what its supposed to be.

A possible 951 owner,
Bryan

Not that it matters but you will smoke the everliving daylights of out of a stock 2.8A4. I mean so bad it isnt worth wasting the gas. Just throw him in the seat and go for a drive, you should never need to line up with him EVER.

Nick,

Have you ever driven an S4? It's no joke, it's quite a satisfying car to drive.
A blast actually!

Oh, the 2.8 is not a fast car so don't even worry Bryan, and FWD! Why have an A4 with no quattro!

The A4 2.8 is a nice car. However it's not really a performance car. The performance is actually rather mundane. It's pretty much the same as a new (1999-current) VW Passat V6.I have driven the VW and the A4 2.8 and I was not impressed by either the power or the handling. However, the S4 is a completely different car. It is quick and fun to drive. It's not a scorching performer, but very fun. Brings up memories of blasting through traffic at 130mph on the freeway. Hehe!

I would think that your 944 n/ auto should be able to out handle and out brake the A4 2.8. I wouldn't bet on a drag race, though. On an autocross course, the 944 should prevail. The 951 will definately kick the A4 2.8's @$$ on all accounts.

how to put this in words.... my old geo storm was able to stay head to head with an A6 Quattro that had that engine.
Geo Storm=1.6L 90hp 2300lbs. Not exactly a rocket.

time for some new "Porsche VS...." bashing!!! YAY!!! A4 and 951 were produced with different perposes in mind.... now i have a friend with that 2.8 in his 97 GTI, twin turboed to 450+ wheel HP. whanna race that?
Your friend has no clue about 951 and that's his downside. 2 Years ago i didn't know 951 existed, not talking about it's capabilities. My friend with a 87 Caprice thinks that it's the best thing ever made.... some peoplle aren't just into cars ya know... like some of us aren't into basket weaving under water there is a thread on the 951 board about 951VSS4 and the person who owns both made quite a few remarks about S4's capabilities But it's not like i have money for any of them.... i just hate threads like theese....

That exact Audi 2.8 engine is used in Passat as well, right? If so, it's not fast - dad has one, and my highly accurate butt dyno says my old 944S was clearly faster. You might even hand him his *** with your N/A

Yeah, I drove a 2.8 and my 924s would have left it before it was lightened. That car feels just like an 83 BMW 320i (US).

-They do have a lot of cool buttons and switches and beep-beep thingys, though.

Vlad- I dont think this is bashing. The 2.8 is just not a quick car. It does run/drive well but it is not quick. Statement of fact only. Stock to Stock a 951 will leave it in the parking lot.

I have both ('00 A4 2.8Q and '89 944na) and would have to say that my 2.8 would beat it in a drag race. People say that the 2.8 has good low-end torque. I don't quite agree. I have to get it above 3k before it starts really pulling hard. Some of it may be the awful dbw throttle. I like my A4, but I have more fun with the 944 (hey, I even have more fun with my 4000S. A 951 should have no problem, though. I'd check under the hood of that 2.8 before making any predictions, though. He may have PES supercharger under it! The problem with the A4 (and all newer cars) is that they weigh waaaay too much.

(Now if it snows................. hee-hee!!)
