Thanks, I thought it was pretty obvious, just wanted to make sure as after hearing him talk it up over and over, it was almost beginning to make me believe it was more car than it was. Also, I completely agree they were built for different reasons, and for a sedan, its a nice car, good interior, comfortable, etc. By no means am I bashing Audi, just wanting to verify what should be common sense.

Newer isn't always better. My main beefs with my A4 are: DBW, dinky backseat, too quiet. The 2.8 is plenty powerful for most things, though. Of course, with quattro and snow tires, a fun time is had by all when it snows.

now, now folks. i have the 170 Hp 12 valve 2.8 and i think its pretty quick all things considered. i have beat my brother at a few auto crosses. he has a modified 951. true it is harder to master the power of the 951 with crappy tires, but never the less i beat him. i also kept up pretty good at an intersection with him, and i even had a bad start. IMHO a A4 will keep up with a N/A. anything beyond that probably not. plus the 2.8 accels in higher speeds as do the 944's. i have been going 105 with a loaded trunk, back seats full, and two bikes on a rack, plus i was in fifth gear i would imagine had i down shifted i might have been able to go faster.

now with the S4 stock it does the quarter as fast if not faster then a stock 951 (i might be wrong). my local SCCA president races his S4 at our auto crosses, and is usually one of the top times (good driver might be the reason). and although not much can be done to the 2.8 other then a supercharger, watch out for some of the 1.8T's. those are very easy to modify and can be very quick.

but like what has been said before they are two entirly different kinds of cars. but please people dont bash my baby. at least its running, my 944 has ran for one month of the year and a half that i have owned it.

No bashing intended. By the way, stock, the A4 will supposedly pull about 7.5 according to all the info I can find. For the 98, that is.

Audi says: Performance

FrontTrak®, automatic: 8.2
FrontTrak®, manual: 7.1
quattro®, automatic: 8.8
quattro®, manual: 7.1
Top track speed: 130 mph1
EPA fuel economy estimates

or,

OK I have the 2000 UK A4 range brochures in front of me:

2.8 (Only comes as Quattro, Auto figures in brackets)
0-60: 7.3 (9.3)
Top speed: 148 (145)

1.8T FWD (Auto figures in brackets)
0-60: 8.4 (9.6)
Top speed: 137 (133)

1.8T Q (No auto with Quattro)
0-60: 7.6
Top speed: 145

http://www.weissach.net/924-944-968_...stSummary.html
on average the 944 has a 0-60 in 7.5, S 6.8, S2 6.4, 951 5.9. i would say looking at these numbers the A4(numbers above) dont do so bad.

i though 944 owners were starting to accept that there cars arent the fastest cars on the road, but rather it is the porsche experience and the fact that the car holds it's own for being so old.

IMO the 2.8 is a terrible engine, and I think the a4 is a terrible car.
They're cheesy, difficult to work on, parts aren't cheap, have audi problems, and don't have any sack to make it worth the trouble. I'm not a fan of the a4's looks either.
It seems like everyone on here is always saying how their 951 will walk all over every other car, which most of the time I don't agree with, but this time, it's true. The a4's do handle well, squidgy, but well, brakes fade fast though.
I think the na and a4 both automatics would be really fairly matched.

my brother has a 98 A4 2.8 FWD and we have both gone autocrossing in our respective cars. although my car is faster in a straight line no questions asked, i have the ****tiest tires on the face of the earth for autocrossing. THerefor, i am only slightly faster in the autocross driving really slow as to not spin out. also, there are 2 s4's that regular the autocrosses around here. they are both screeming fast. Basically it is the driver (both of them are awsome... they are brothers) being levels ahead of the rest of the pack, but that car can move!

so yeah, if you are planning on racing the 2.8 with tires like mine, then it might be close. if you have any other tires, you are set. oh and i have yokohama AVIDs or something... they are only V rated and are sopposed to be all weather tires, but they suck just as much in rain and snow as they do in dry pavement. (and you can guess what my next purchase will be...)

WOHHH tim (jaibieber)! your car is no where close to mine off the line. i was running 8 lbs of boost and still walked past you like you were hardly moving. also, our autocross times, mine are always faster (with the exception of the myautoimportscenter one) but you get a handy cap with the pax time thingy... damn SM2.... damn tires...

not the place or time to discuss this. i never said i always beat you. i said i did. and we have had it a few times of the lines. you smashed me on the east beltline. but the other times i was a little closer (i pushed it a little harder and better starts). and yeah you have ****ty tires but mine arent race tires either. and my stock suspension, well its nothing to die for. body roll gallore. but in the end i love your car alot but when i have to squeeze five people in my car to go boarding, Audi all the way.

in that case the audi would definitely win. Mothra is light weight, were godzilla is a heavy mother with a high CG.

951 will stomp the A4.
944NA vs A4 would be a closer race, unless there's some turns.

The A4 is a pig.

Ah, I see this thread made it over to the NA board...

"951 will stomp the A4."
Check out these two videos from Sears Point:
