Default clutch spacing, early engagement

Search terms didn't do me favors on this odd subject. Is it normal to feel the clutch engage once, then feel a second stage of pressure as the pedal is fully released? I'm getting the impression that maybe the pressure plate causes first engagement, then second engagement as the flywheel is met.

I actually experience this a bit on my MGB as well. Am I crazy? It's like I have to throttle up to start moving, then I let the pedal out and the RPMS fall again. It's most obvious when starting from a stop, but not apparent if you pay attention in other gears.
