Aleternator Belt Tension Specs
My 924S is making an awful squeel under high electrical load (rear defroster, front froster...etc) even when the engine is warmed up. What would be the appropriate readings to get with the Kricket tool on the alternator belt? I am hoping the alt. bearing isnt on its way out...
I have a feeling its just because of the snow and cold. It was squeeling slightly in the rain and cold (around 45 degrees). Its now about 35 degrees and seven inches of snow on the ground. I know the belt deflection should be about 5mm, but want to double check.

If you have the 9201 tensioner it should be around 9.5. Next time I am under there (probable in the next week or 2) I can cross reference to the click it guage and post. I recall that the p/s pump belt is 5 mm deflection.

If you are sure the noise is the belt slipping, make sure you haven't snaped a a/c compressor bolt first. 9.5 is appropiate if you don't have the 9201 you could at least tighten it until the belt stops squeeling.

where can i get ac compressor bolts? i can probably just go to the hardware store and get one right? i havent looked whawt they are yet, al i know is my ac compressor flops down if the belt isnt tight
anyone know what the size of the bolt is or such?

I used the 9201 tool on my belt. The factory spec seems extremely tight for the accessory belts. Do other tool owners actually tighten them up that much. I left it that way, but wonder about it...

I do not have the tool, but when I tightened it to the 5mm deflection. I thought it was to tight.. so I backed it off.. It squealed like a stuck pig. At 5mm deflection it has been ok. I think it might be tighter because it is a grooved belt instead of a V. friction is less not sure of what the surface area is, related to a grooved to a V. Even the powersteering belt feels overtight.. But seems to work.. I just did mine 4 mos ago..

I just did the re-tension on all of my belts today using the optikrik I tool. Yea baby.......that poly-rib belt is tight! 85lbs using my tool. The power steering belt I got 45lbs. when at proper deflection. (God I love those 6 bladed fans I just put on, there so much quieter). HTH

I've been having the same squeal problem. Before I go under there to fix, is the squeal usually a sign of the belt being too tight or too loose?

I use the water method of AC belt adjustment. I tighten the belt, start the car, squirt the belt with water and rev the engine. If it squeals I tighten it a bit and try again.
The poly-rib belt is a bunch of small V belts. Five ribs on the early 944;s and six on the 85.5's and newer. Larger alternator.
So you will see less friction around the pulley as the multiple V's are not as deep as a single V but will have over all greater surface area.

It is a very bad idea to tighten a whining belt untill it stops. If the belt is old or defective tightening it over and over will damage the bearings on the alternator.

I've got to agree with Christian, an old belt will squeal like a stuck pig pretty darn easy. It is the hard rubber. Even "new" belts can have this problem if they have been sitting in the distribution system for years upon years.

I checked my belt tension using the deflection method...much more than a 5mm deflection. I did a loose reading with the cricket, read about 30lbs if i remember correctly. The belt is new, i replaced it in August.
