I just recently toasted my ring and pinion. Lets just say my 951 has a little too much power for an S ring and pinion. I won't tell why I had an S ring and pinion in there in the first place. Any how, my pinion gear was still turning, but the teeth were shredded. I had a bunch of fine filings in my oil. I caught it before it completly went.

Thanks for the diagnostic help in the above posts. For any future folks searching these threads, the problem ended up being the ring and pinion in the transmission so had a used one put in instead of rebuilding since that is a more cost effective approach. The clutch ended up being good and according to my mechanic the reason that very little metal is found when draining the oil is that when the ring and pinion fails within the transmission case it is in an area wear the broken teeth and particulate don't drain out with the oil. Good news is the car runs great again, just a little lighter in the wallet. FYI, don't let any shops rip you off with excessive transmission Remove and Replace estimates since this is a 2 hour job by any shop that knows how to work on these cars. I was quoted 5 to 6 hours in labor by one shop when I called around which is gouging.

Ive got a similar noise on mine...the car dirves fine however when I release the clutch it gives me the same clank noise. it operates fine in all gears and rolls fine in neutral it just clanks. does that sound more like the rubber center piece failing?..thanks

Redlyne_mr2, your problem sound like a clutch where 944visage's problem sounded like R&P from the start. Do this to check. Drive in any gear, quick snap on the gas and immediate release throttle. If your car clunks back and forth, your rubber doughnut is gone. I see this waaaay too often.....
