Default Speaker question

For my '87 951, complete with a lot of the sound deadening removed and a 3" Lindsey exhaust system, I am pondering my options as far as car stereo/speakers. Has anybody installed 8" subwoofers in the rear speaker location (under the rear quarter windows), a mid range speaker in the door speaker location and a tweeter up high on the door panel and wired it up to a decent three way cross-over? I suppose a set of good 4x6" speakers would probably be a better way to go.

Is this too much work for not enough benefit? I realize that the subwoofers should be in enclosures, driven by big amps, etc... but I don't want to carry a bunch of weight around, as car performance is my big concern, not stereo performance. I don't need "audiophile" quality sound, as its a loud car to begin with and my ears are shot from 30 years (EGADS! has it already been 30 years???!) of playing loud rock n roll...

Regards,

i believe MTX makes a pair of free-air 8's which do not need an enclosure. they would be your best bet.

however, your high-mid-low combination off of a 3-way crossover will not be worth the investment, the head unit will simply not be able to push the 8's. you'll get the same amount of bass from a decent set of 6x9's with an external crossover for much cheaper.

jbl's power series speakers all include external crossovers (makes all the difference in getting clean bass from the woofer cone) and they are reasonably priced compared to the competition. i'd go with their 4x6 2-way plates up front and 6x9 3-way in the rear which will satisfy your bass needs. audionmore.com sells the 4x6's for $100 and the 6x9's for $150, if i remember correctly. be sure to get the power series which include the external crossovers.

I agree, except I've yet to hear any "free air" subs that work/sound right.

And I'd put 6.5" drivers up front rather then the 4 X 6
