Why I never throw things out...
I used to always catch crap from my dad for being a pack rat. If I pulled a part off a car, I'd hang on to it if I thought there was any possible reason it could be salvagable.
Take, for example, the CO test tube that I couldn't get mounted back onto my Jetta's new manifold two weekends ago. Rather than throw it out, I hung on to it for some reason.
Now, I've made several posts concerning the possible death of my 944's catalytic converter. Today, I decided to pull it off to confirm the problem. While doing so, I remembered that I was also getting an exhaust leak around the O2 sensor. I felt around trying to find a possible hole when I bumped the CO test tube. And if fell to the side. It would seem that the tube has corroded off the cat! Which is good news, because I didn't want to have to buy a new cat...
So, realizing that I'm going to have to order something to fill that hole so I can still drive the car, I grab the little brass cap and see if I can find something to screw over the mount. I wasn't successful, so I planned on sealing a screw in there with some exhaust paste as my band aid. Then I remembered the Jetta's old CO tube. Hmmm... I go under the car and sure enough, it screws right on!
Granted, of course, it doesn't go where it needs to go. But hey, it works until I can get the part ordered. Which may be a long, long time...
