Cleaning 30+ years of grime...
I've been restoring an 86' 951 pretty much literally from the ground up. I've worked through the rotors, bearings, and now the half axels. On the side of the half axels that's connected to the transaxle there is caked on grease every where. It was bad enough that I wound up stripping several cheese head bolts with very little effort (quarter turn by hand stripped them).
Anyways I've got the half axels out and I'm taking them to a local shop to rebuild them. While they are out I want to clean up the exterior of the transaxle and the fins on the transmission lines on the passenger side of the car. (US)
I've been using various parts cleaners but they don't see to do that great of a job for the amount of product used. I've done some scraping to some success but the cooling fins on the hose that comes out of the transmission line is tedious at best.
Has anyone found a decent method for cleaning this kind of stuff up? I've thought about a steam cleaner of some sorts.
Other than just making sure everything is clean as I put things back together I want to start with a clean slate so I can find any new leaks that may or may not be there.

I used a pressure washer with general use pressure washer soap stuff.
Definitely drain it when you're done and fill with cheap fluid or diesel, then drain that and fill with good fluid. Water can get into the breather at the top.

Curiously, since you have the trans out are you going to replace the drive seals? I wish I had don mom while it was out. As far as cleaning goes I used a pressure washer first then general clean up its diesel.
