1987 924S to Carrera GT/GTS Tribute Project

I have stopped and started this project a few times over the years, but as of right now I am starting it again. I am going to attempt to build a 924 Carrera GT/GTS tribute starting with a 924S.

Saturday this 1987 924S followed me home, she is a bit rough around the edges but that is what I wanted. It would have been a shame to cut up a perfect 924S given that they are getting harder and harder to find.

Right now I am just in the planning stages, trying to figure out what trim level to target and how I will divide up the work. I figure the best thing to do will be to get the car into a driveable state and then make a decision on what steps to take next. I have a list of things that I need to buy, and a list of things I am going to be selling off the car if there is any interest:

Parts Needed (note for the CGT parts I will take replica pieces, as the OEM stuff would be worth a kings ransom)
-- Fuchs (replica OK)
-- Seats (long term looking for some period correct buckets)
-- 924/44 Dash (Is it possible to find a crack free one?)
-- Shift boot @ plastic mounting plate (not sure what that is called)
-- Going to need a lot of the black interior trim, much of it is cracked
-- 924 Turbo header panel with vents

Parts Sourced
-- 944 Fenders
-- 924 Carrera GT Flares
-- 924 Carrera GT Bumper
-- 924 Carrera GT Hood Scoop
-- 924 Euro Rear Bumper
-- 924/44 Slicktop
-- 924 Euro front turn signals / driving lights / bumperettes
-- 924/44 door cards (black)
-- 924/44 door handle
-- 924/44 drivers side window regulator
-- 924/44 door stop mount
-- 944 hatch spoiler

Parts For Sale
-- 924S Fenders - $50
-- 924 Valance - $50
-- 924 Valance Grill - $20
-- 924 Rear Bumper & Shocks - SOLD
-- 924 Front Bumper - $50

All that said, here she is in her before state (pictures are hiding a ton of body flaws):

Quick update to the post with parts needed. Prefer to source close to Charlotte, NC, but I know that won't be possible for everything.

So glad to see that you are going thru with this project! Can't wait to see the finished result. If you aren't trying to be period perfect, for wheels you may want to consider some 17" fuchs replicas. It will open up your tire choices and IMHO fill out those haunches better.

So you're making a GT replica, not a GTS, body is different(compared to the GT) on the GTS...fenders, front bumper, rear spoiler, rear arches, wheels, brakes..etc.

Hi Ian, for your 924CGT parts, I found the pieces I bought from A.I.R. to be good quality and they were a really good vendor to deal with since I'm quite a distance.

for the "924 Euro front turn signals and buckets" you can use your own turn signals, they are the same. Not sure what you mean about buckets. The driving/park lights you can get from any RoW 924 or 944 front bumper, they are the same.

The RoW 924 rear bumper is different to the 924CGT one. The latter is deeper and looks more like a US one without the big bumperettes on them.

924 Turbo header panel with vents

Hey dude, I have these and no longer own a 944. Just been lying around in the garage for a few years.

edit: for some reason I installed one vent and left the other vents in a plastic bag, they are original PORSCHE OEM and not reproduction either. I can definitely dig them up for you. At my dads house I believe.

edit: also it is white, so you'll need to paint ofc. no dents in the metal

Tifo, I'm thinking of running 951 brakes, so I might need to target 951 fuchs, at least for the front. I have a set of 951 hubs and spindles sitting on a shelf and this seems like as good a project as any to use them on.

Tribute, not replica. So things will be different, very much so from the original, but in that same style.

I have been in contact with a couple of the places that make the fiberglass, but I appreciate the real world experience. So hard to tell what will fit well and what will require hours of labor.

PM sent, what is funny as I think I am the one that sold you the vents off of Pelican. What goes around comes around....

OK, so a GT tribute :)
Good luck!

It has been time to raid my spare parts storage and make a few repairs and changes to the project:

Up first I decided to check the waterpump, the impeller moves around at least a 1/8 inch and there is tons of metal missing. I had a pump on the shelf, but waiting on the gaskets and belts to do the job.

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1502802000.jpg

Next up the drivers side window regulator, it looks like someone tried to "fix" it at some point in the past. Thankfully I had one of those on the shelf too.

Broken door stop mount (or whatever it is called)

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1502802000.jpg

924 spoiler swapped out for a 944 part

https://forums.pelicanparts.com/uplo...1502802000.jpg

And a momo steering wheel, it does not fit with the rest of the tatty interior, but I'm working on that.

This is an awesome project and I am glad that you are going to go through with it. Please let me know if I can lend you a hand on it .

....

Yep, then you'd want 951 fuchs for the front. Ideally you'd find a set of 8's for the front, and then you could buy a set of 930 replica 16x9's for the rear. They fit over 951 rear brakes with plenty of clearance and don't cost anywhere near the cost of the real 9's. Would fill those rear quarters out well and have that deep dish looks that's period appropriate........

Door cards came yesterday in the mail, not sure why I am so jazzed about these, but I am. The combination of not having a speaker cutout, and the PORSCHE script just works for me.

Just slowly poking at it right now, should have the timing belt and water pump job wrapped up by the weekend. But help is always welcome (the white 951 needs to have the power steering rack pulled again, but I think that is more of a one man job).

951 8s are the ideal choice up front. I had two full sets of 951 fuchs, but ended up selling one set to Richard (Black944turbo) and then sold a car and included a set. Given the pace of this project I am not worried about it and I am sure another set will pop up before it is time to put the 951 brakes on.

Hi Ian, I am all to familiar with pulling racks as of late and would prefer not to repeat that job for a while.

As for the cgt, I would love to check it out and help "supervise" or lend a hand. Let me know when you need anything.

The fuchs are very much appreciated and I am enjoying them thoroughly.

WizPorsche944 08-18-2017 10:42 AM

This thread is great, been wanting to do this to a 924s myself for years. I will be following along.

One thing I didn't see on you list you may want to look for is the Carrera fender decal.
