DME serial output

Is it possible to change the frequency of the output just by modifying the code in the DME??? Hmm, that would make things much easier, I was trying to work out a frequency converter with a 9 bit buffer...
well, I also have a question about the actual physical output of the dme, what is the voltage it puts out?? is it 0V for low, and +12V for high? Or is this more bad information I have been fed?
I was thinking I would (if I can get a eeprom burner) change the code so it will put out all the data all the time, at a reasonable frequency. provided the frequency is high enough to get decent resolution on the output, then just have the program decide what it throws away =)
