Scootin159, i have a '87 924S...think it would have those adapter plates also? Also, for those 6x9's what type of clearance do they have for the rear, i have a feeling those wouldnt fit under 924S fenders.

i have infinity kappa front and rear. infinty beta digital amp. infinity kappa perfect 12s 3.5 in front 5x7 in rear had to modify for all. blaupunkt san jose mp3 player: puts out more constant power than previous but, i really liked my clarion head more>>>> i wanted an mp3 player but clarion's wasnt out yet. im having a ton of problems with the blaupunkt right now. the speakers are probably the best ive heard.

I'm hoping to replace the rears sometime this winter and add a small sub and possibly get a new amp. The car also came with a nearly new Sony Xplode head unit and what appears to be an extremely aged blaupunkt amp.
When I took mine out mine were "blown" as well. Not from excessive volume though, but just from age. The 16 year old paper cone speakers had just fallen apart. Not saying he didn't listen to it loud, but if the surrounds of the cones were damaged, it was most likely more age than excessive volume.

I don't know if the 924S would have the adaptor plates or not. I think somebody else had tried this before on another 924S, but I don't remember the outcome. You could check without getting the panel all the way off I would think, just by taking off the bottom screws & pulling back the trim by the door (real easy to do) and just taking a peek.

As for clearence with the fender, that's a bit tougher. I actually had a LOT of depth to work with, unfortunatly I didn't really have enough room for tweeter protrusion. My panel is bowed out 1/4" because of it, with the stress being taken by the tweeter housing (not affecting sound). However on a 924S I imagine you'll have less space. Hmm...I'd say probably not enough room just off the top of my head, but really hard to guess without seeing it in person or having some real #'s.

This is a good thread. I have been considering upgrading my speakers and haven't as I was not interested in taking them all out just to figure out what will fit. I have a Sony head unit from PO in dash and the factory (as far as I know) 10 speaker system in the rest of the car minus the factory EQ.

I have had some serious money wrapped up in stereo equipment long before most of the ricer crowd were even born and maybe it's because my ears are bad from really load metal or just because I'm old, but my stereo pretty much kicks *** as is. I have seen some customers cars with a ton of audio gear but none that I can remember as being killer.

I'm not sure were I would put an amp. Most of the ones I have looked at are too big for what I want. Maybe I need to look somewhere else. I used to be able to get a 40-50 watt amp that was roughly 10x12 or something close.

What do you guys use and where do you put it?

I'm just running of the head right now, but eventually I want to go to having 2 amps in the spare tire compartment (one for a sub(s), one for the main 4 speakers). Put a KLA sub in one rear compartment and then some tools in the other.

Infinity Kappas in front, stock in rear, custom "stealth" subwoofer install (removed spare, wrapped Bazooka tube in carpet, shoved it and can of Fix-A-Flat in hole). Considering how little it all cost it sounds extremely good.

best sound system for the dollar (my humble opinion):

head unit clarion dxz835 - $260
fronts jbl p6452 - $100
rears jbl p652 - $130
sub jbl p1020 - $180
speaker amp jbl p80.4 - $180
sub amp jbl bp600.1 - $200
home built sub box - $50
wiring - $50

total - $1150

the clarion head unit is the cheapest head unit with dual 24 bit d/a (digital to analog) converters. that's what determines the quality of the signal sent to the speakers, basically what you're going to hear. the internal amp in this unit isn't the strongest, but we're running the fronts and rears on the p80.4 amp and pretending the head unit doesn't even have an amp. the clarion also comes with 4V preamps which is more than enough for pushing 1000W total for the two amps. the 8V preamps offered by the high end and pricey eclipse models are overkill in our case.

the new line of jbl car audio speakers in unbelievable with so many external crossover systems available. when you hear them side by side against much more expensive systems, you can't help but laugh at the poor other guy's car who spent twice as much.

install this stuff yourself. it's not so bad, odds are you have a friend who's done it before and can help you the first time 'round. i also recommend hard-wiring (soldering) instead of using crimped connectors. every great system i've ever heard has been hard-wired.

all the prices i've listed are from online dealers, not from dubious ebay sellers. so go to it.

Currently, have the stock Blaupunkt unit
- tape doesn't work
- there's no permanent power to keep the radio memories
- can't see the LCD at night - no light.

Speakers 4x6 all round, fronts have Alpine grills, but no idea what is behind them, and only 3 of them seem to work.

Took out the Headunit and it really is a jumble of wires.

I have just got an Alphine 9805 Head and have a couple of JBL GTO462 4x6 to fit..

Just need to order a new -ve battery cable, as the clamp on mine is bent beyond recognition, and I doubt it will go back on if I take it off to do the install.

I think in the spring I'm going to get a new head unit and then those Sony speakers (XS-W4621 4"x6") in the front. I'm just going to leave the rear speakers as is, since I can't be bothered to do all the work just to get some speakers in. Maybe in the future.

Whats the sound quality like with those Sonys?
