Default 924 '77 barn find...

Hello guys, I want to have your opinion on this. A friend asked me to have a look at this 924 '77. It owned by an old lady (husband is 82, sick... ), she want to sell it. It's in pretty good shape, but this car have been stored for 25 years about. It have only 47588 km. Engine head was done before storage. Sadly, it sit on brand new 25 years old tires... I tought the rubbers would have all been dried but no, they all look fine. Anyway, what can you expect to do on a car like this to put it back on the road? And considering the age and milleage, what does it worth? I know 911, I have a 96 turbo, but this is very different than what I'm used to... Thanks!

The hardest part will be cleaning the fuel injection system.

It uses Bosch CIS which is a good system when it works, but the fuel metering distributor and warm up valve will be where your work is. The pump can be replaced and the tank, fuel lines an injectors cleaned, but the fuel metering distributor has very, very close clearances. You can try cleaning it by running carburetor cleaner through it with a pump but it will be time intensive and your results are uncertain.

If you're confident in working on these type of cars go for it. But your purchase money should be "disposable" money so that if you can't get the car running, you are OK to lose the money.

Agree.

Among the fuel system components, the FD [fuel distributor] and WUR [warm up regulator] will not have benefitted from sitting idle for 25 years. As Paul mentioned, CIS is a good system when working, but it is also susceptible to corrosion and pitting from non-use. No worries, there are independent specialists within Porsche circles that can test and rebuild both of those components for modest costs.

Not sure how many first year 924s made it to North America, but if the car really has less than 50k km, and the interior is indicative of that mileage, with the provenance of originality, this car is definitely worth saving and tucking away in your collection.

Good luck...let us know what happens.
