I know that the 1.7L is a VW engine, how much different is it from a VW 1600 in terms of parts? How about the transmission? I want to buy an engine from a local with a wrecked 914, but I want to have a cheap to maintain engine much like the 1600. Thanks for your help

 

Most parts are the same. Just say VW instead of Porsche. Bus motors are very close. But, NOT THE SAME! Dipstick and other parts are diff. Don't let anyone tell you that they are the same motor.

I kind of figured that, but what about the transmission, can it be mounted a bug rearend and shifter linkage with relitive ease
