injectors not firing on a 74 914
Hello Guys
Wondering if I can get a little help. I am a 928 guy, and am pretty dang good with those cars, but 914's are somewhat foreign.
A customer of mine recommended to Gary that he bring his car to me for help to get it running. Gary is a very nice guy that has been working on restoring this 914 for many years, and he has done a great job with the car. Problem is he couldn't ever get it to run. When it first got here I shot some gas into the intake and the car fired right up. I was able to keep it running if I kept giving it little shots of fuel, so I know spark, air, and timing are good, its just not getting any fuel. First thing I notice was the fuel pump was not engaging. So I've spent a few hours at this point and repaired some wiring issues. The pump now works, but the injectors are just not firing.
After spending some time with the manual I believe that there is no timing signal to the brain telling the injectors when to fire. According to the manual, the brain gets it's signal form the distributor with pins 12,21,22, one being 12v and the other 2 being signal wires. I have found what I believe to be these 3 wires taped up and not being used. But this distributor has no place to connect these wires??? Does he have the wrong distributor in the car?? He says its the right one and that this system get its signal in a different way, from the distributor to coil connection or something. This does no make sense to me, can someone shed some light here.
Apparently there is more than one fuel injection type for this year due to engine size. I have attached some pictures so you can see what I am working on.
THANKS!!

Victor, make sure that you do not have an efi trigger point (D-jet) style distributor in that 1.8.
The harness + ecu must also match for this L-jet AFM type efi.
Also check your cylinder head temp sensor + connector, these make a very good kill switch if defective.
The Bosch Barn-door efi , same as found on the 912e, or post cis 928 engines are not too hard to diagnose. You will need a schematic to find #12,21,22...or a sister car to check against.
Perhaps Peter Zimmermann is reading and will chime in !

This distributor has no connectors on or under it for triggers. So how or where does it get it's injection pulse timing from??? I have the electronics manual and schematics
I had the L-jet barn door style in my 83 928, and my 944s2 also has a barn door... it seems ok to me, but I will do some voltage checks. I will check the temp sensor for sure then.
Thanks Marty

The injection pulse timing is achieved thru a wire that goes to the (-) side of the ignition coil. This wire should be white, and leads back to the ECU.
Do you still have this car? I can walk you thru and get this running.

Hi Tim... Yep that is correct and I figured it out a month or so ago. He had a couple of wires switched around into the wrong connectors. Once I figured out what went where she fired right up
thanks
