Okteenerfest - REGISTRATION OPEN!!
For those of you that do not frequent the 914world forum, this is something Steve Schleif and I are working on:
"If you find WCR, RRC, MUSR, ECC, TR and many other 914 events are simply too far away to attend, then chances are you live in the Southeast."
Last Summer, Steve (poorsche914 on 914world) and I were discussing the need for a Southeast-based 914 gathering. Steve and another 914 owner decided to do a simple little Day Drive in the Smokies just to get out and drive with some fellow teeners...You could say the Day Drive was a "test run" for the annual event to come. I coined the term "Okteenerfest" and we have both committed to making this event happen.
see the following threads on 914world: http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.p...T&f=2&t=203780
and
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.p...ic=194385&st=0
Since the 914 was built to handle, the main emphasis of Okteenerfest will be driving (we do have some awfully nice roads around here). To keep it fresh, we plan to rotate the event among several different locales in the Smoky Mountain area encompassing an area from Tail of the Dragon in TN, east to Asheville, NC, and as far south as Helen, GA.
Each year we will "honor" a specific year and/or type of 914 i.e. 1.7 cars, race cars, LE cars, big bumper cars, etc to help illustrate the particular traits of that group of 914s. Depending on venue, there could also be an autocross, car show, tech session, etc
So watch this space for details as they become available and make plans to attend. Your 914 will love you for it!!
We also set up a Facebook page www.facebook.com/okteenerfest
Oh, and 993inNC...you need to get your car done by then!!

Beautiful country for a drive! My older son was in that neighborhood a couple years ago in his Cayman S and was in heaven!! The Tail is definitely on my bucket list...

I would attend such an event with a big smile on my face. I am in Kings Mtn. and local works best for me. Please post details on any events you find in our area.

Steve and I went to scout out the route this past weekend, had to change some things from our original route (found a dirt road!) but things are really starting to come together.
Tentative Itinerary:
Thursday afternoon: begin registration/meet-n-greet
Friday: all day drive, places like the Foothills Parkway and Tail of the Dragon (and many more great roads)
Saturday: people's choice car show; lunch; choice of 3 driving routes; possible tech session; end the day with banquet and awards
Sunday: autocross for those who don't have to hurry back home (some of you may have Monday off)
Will be looking for volunteers to help in a variety of areas such as reaching out to sponsors for give-aways, goodie bag items, etc; awards ideas; marketing to your area (flyers, emails, etc); and so on.
Here is some video Steve put together from Saturday:

Yeah, I was amazed how empty it was, probably because it rained in the morning. Afternoon on the second half of the route was busier...

Just over a week til Okteenerfest begins. Still time to register. The host hotel Lodge at Valley View had a few rooms open up last week. There may be one or two left over. If not there, then next door at Highlands Manor Inn may have one available. LODGING INFO
You really don't want to miss this event. We currently have 43 registrants representing 27+ 914s coming from 6 states.

Well, for all you that did not make it to Okteenerfest...you missed a really good weekend.
We had 29 914’s and 47 people in attendance, and only 2 fairly minor issues along the way…I’d have to say that’s quite impressive!! People DROVE their 914’s from as far away as Northern Indiana, and we had representation from 6 different states. Every year of 914 was represented except 1976, and we did have one real 914-6.
Despite the government shut down, we adjusted our drive and did over 200 miles on Friday through some of the most scenic and fun roads anywhere. We had a great People's Choice car show with a beautiful Creamsicle owned by Jim and Mel Flanagan winning Best of Show. We had great awards, great fun, and met some awesome new people.... Can't wait until next year!!
Details, photos, videos, etc will be posted on the Okteenerfest website at www.okteenerfest.com. Check back often for updates on the 2014 Okteenerfest!!
