914's are tough!
Digging through some photo albums. Came across these Polaroids of a '70's Porsche 914 which I ran over.
Albuquerque I-40 Eastbound just past San Mateo I checked the driver's mirror and saw an orange spot blipping horizontally. Soon it was evidence of a 1970-73 914 erratically darting among traffic, getting closer. I saw his unnecessary belligerence as he fained a cut, then steered away before returning to an open lane because of the previous car's decision to brake.
I was in my 1968 Ford Econoline with a fresh and strong uncapped 490 V8. Two bucket seats and the rest an encapsulated carpet cave.
So here he came, made the move, which I didn't buy, he went back towards his lane a bit, and then here he came again! He didn't look. Next thing I know is staring down into the interior of this t-boned 914 with the Targa top stashed away. When he contacted me, we were doing 85. He proceeded Southward while I pushed him Eastward, all the while I never touched the brakes, just started steering left. His momentum carried us toward the right lane's shoulder, his nose submarined under the guard rail while removing two 8" x 8" posts. Then his front end made contact with the 20" post base for the cantilevered exit sign. He stopped. I involuntarily chose to turn him into a ramp, as the wheel track dent on his hood attests. I came down with wheels turned and head on met the Jersey Bounce while having unknowingly been supplied with rotation, continued with a chassis grind atop for a bit, dismounted and finished with a tail slap. I was now still and the first car approaching was a NM State Trooper acting as though he were warming his tires for a slalom race. He stopped, got out and peered in the 914 as he then turned toward me and began to smile. Pulled a couple of fistfuls of belt upward and said, "I been chasin' that porch since Rio Bravo man, thanks!" (13 miles)
Three years later, I was in a real estate class and they did roll call. "Aboyami Fadipai?" . . . . uh, "here!" Then they came to my name, "Clark Mossman?", . . . "president." Then we looked at each other, he said "*******", I said "turn signal". We never spoke again. Glad he was alive.
