Default 914 steering wheels

I have a couple of 914 wheels that I was planning on converting to wood. I just saw one sell on eBay for about what i get on early 911/912 wheels. Question is: Do many 914 owners look for wood wheels, or it the market real small.

Question 2: One of the wheels is the soft rubber, that had a leather cover. Alternative to making this into wood, I considered putting is back to the leather cover. The only issue is that a small part of the rubber is off one of the spokes. Has anyone ever tried to fill in missing rubber? And if so, what did you use? I realize that it will be covered by leather, and won't show, but I would like the feel to be consistent with the rest of the wheel.

Thanks

While there is possibly a small market for wood streering wheels on a 914, I find the look completely out of place.

That was kind of my thought. I guess I will just restore this in leather. I build wood wheels, but never have tried my hand in leather. Guess there is a first time for everything.

To answer your unasked question, the reason that you see a number of these wheels sell for pretty decent prices is because they are often used to put a smaller wheel in an RS replica. I have sold three or four of them to Europe for more than $100 each when local guys on 914world and the like sell them to each other for $50-60.
