Modifying a 914/6 - what is allowed
.
Long ago we had a discussion about modifying 914/6's and when it is recommended to stiffen the car.
I have since found the two references in Porsche papers to this very point....and some of you might be disappointed by what Porsche say !!
Big Wheels on a 914/6: Reference: 91402_01.doc 10.04.03 (it's in German)
The document gives a list of the recommended wheels but as they get bigger modifications become necessary.
For example when you fit your car with the biggest optionson the rear: 8 J x 15 with 215/60 tyres, or 7 J x 16 with 225/50 tyres, or 8 J x 16 with 225/60 tyres, it says you need everything:
1. sway bars front and rear,
2. the steel wheel arch extensions
3. an original 916 steel roof welded in or the same stiffness achieved by fitting a roll cage.
Then on Big Engines in a 914/6: Reference: Prufbericht Nr. 18 10 05 4933/1 27.01.2000 (it's in German too)
up to 130 PS: no modifications necessary
up to 160 PS: sway bars front and rear
up to 180 PS: sway bars front and rear and ventilated discs on the back axle
up to 210 PS: sway bars front and rear, big brakes on the front, ventilated discs on the back axle, and to stiffen the body an original 916 steel roof welded in or the same stiffness achieved by fitting a roll cage.
It also says that engines over 3000 cm3 are not allowed.
So how many of your cars still meet Porsche recommendations ???

I agree with the second reference on the HP/ upgrades issues.
I guess over 3.0 weren't allowed because I'll assume the only Porsche motor larger than 3.0L was a 928 V8
Interesting find though.. Thanks for sharing!
