Default 996 engine in a 914/6

I am just wondering what people feel or think about putting a 996 engine mated to a boxster S 6 speed trans into a 914? Some of the advantages that I see is that used 996 engines are alot cheaper than 993 engines, have more horsepower, it would shift alot better. Also the engine is lighter in the 996, and no external oil tank, or engine sheet metal needed. The down side? future value? Not as original? (air cooled) Reliability when pushed hard? exhaust fab. issues.( Possably no heat.)

Go for it! The pluming will be a pain since it is watercooled, but it would be a cool little car. At least it isn't Chevy V-8!!!!!!!!

I think the "plumbing" for the liquid cooled engine would put a lot of people off. Though, people do it with V8 and Subaru transplants.

What is the physical width of a 996 engine? One might have to do a bit of structural changes to wedge that engine in.

I'm sure anything is possible given enough budget. Hell, you could put in a Ferrari Testarossa flat 12 if you were willing to change enough!

Because the 993 engines are an evolution of the engine the 914/6 had originally, it's easy to order engine mounts, sheet metal, oil sump, etc.

Why not just put a 3.2 in it as that is SOOOOOOOOOOOO much easier and it will go like Stink!

The reason I am thinking of a 996 engine is for the HP and performance. 300-365hp vs. 272-300hp on the 993 engine. But the main reason that I am even thinking about the 996 engine is to mate it to the boxster S transmission. I bought a 914 16 years ago and fell in love with the car. It just needed to be stiffer, more power, and have better brakes and the car would be complete. In my opinion, one of the best pure sport car to ever hit the road.

Hasn't someone already put a 996 engine in an early 911?
Pretty sure I saw one in Excellence awhile ago...

As a good drover who owns many porsches (including a nicely modded 914/6) once said to me "Just take everything 914 off and replace it with 911 stuff and you got a pretty good car"

I've seen pictures of a 3.6 litre 964 or 993 engine in an orange 914. It fit, barely. I believe he mounted the airintake backwards and had to cut part of the trunk to accomodate the air box and MAF.

Now the early boxsters are getting very cheap so the question is if you put the boxster running gear in a 914....

or.....

Put a 914 outer skin on a boxster !!!!! Now that would be a cool car.

You would have to get some big brakes on a 914 like this to stop this monster down. What would you go with?

When you do the 5-lug conversion, I think it would be easy enough to put a set of 951 brakes on there - or your could go with 993 big reds.

My project allready has 993 front calipers with 930 rotors and 965 rear calipers with 930 rotors. I modified the rear trailing arms to accept 911 rear parking brakes and mount the rear calipers without adapters. If I did put the 996 engine in the shell, I would use the entire wiring harness from the boxster.

.
My 914/6 has the front struts from the '74 Carrera, this allows the slightly bigger brakes and these should be big enough for most things.

However is you go to 300 HP I would consider if there is some way to get ABS in there.

Other wise the first wet day could be a lot of fun.
