Default WTB: 914 project car

OK...I have been wanting to build a 914-6/GTconversion ever since I saw my first one at a Mid-Ohio Vintage GP 6-years ago. So, the time is now...I am looking for a good project car - with or without motor and tranny. I prefer something with no rust (yes I know, they all have rust to some extent), but living in Ohio it is hard to find a good one. As rust issues here are a little different than a car in Az with rust issues - if you know what I mean. This is not to say that I won't consider something with rust issues, just want to find the best I can for reasonable expense. And, want to make sure that the rust issues are something that I can dal with...limited funds, experience and don't want this to turn into a 10-year project. Many have told me that southern Cali. is where to find them. well where are they and are they reasonable priced? Therefore, I am curious if anybody out there in the Rennlist family can point me in the direction a few good ones. I have a small budget, but would be willing to stretch it if the right car (or tub) came available. I prefer the early cars 70 -73, yet since it will be a complete restoration and conversion build, this isn't extremely important - it all depends on the condition and cost.

Thanks in advance for any leads
Tom

What is your budget for spending on a car? I don't have one for sale, but it will help me in looking for one if I have an idea.

As for budget, I'd like to keep the initial cost around 3K, yet this is dependant on the condition of the tub - and if it has a good motor and tranny. However, I would be willing to stretch a bit for a really good tub and such. This may be a little low, but my intention is to complete tear down the car and rebuild it to my specs, therefore, I'm willing to fix some problems as I go.

Thanks again in advance for any leads.

My intention is to build a fun street car that may see some drive ed & autocross action, but mostly for fun spirted country road cruising. I already have a race car (944 Turbo), therefore, no need to go that route and/or fill those shoes. If all possible, I'd like to start with a decent running car and slowly build on the suspension, body and interior to the point where I'm ready to tear it down and mount up a flat6.

Thanks
Tom

Sounds like you have the right idea, just stay away from RUST. If there is a little some place that means there is a lot more in other places.

$3k is not going to get you a decent starting point....I wold guess you need to spend at least $5k to get a good donor that has the basic stock parts. A friend of mine has my old 914 (that he'd sell for ~$9k)...and it has a 2.4L w/webers, custom rear flares, 5 bolt hub conversion, 7 & 8 fuchs, raised spindles, big sways, and a cage...IMO you're much better off looking for a car like that than a $3k rust bucket.

Hang in there. It takes a while to find the right 914.

If you want a project car, I may be able to help you out. Bill D at Autobahn Collision here in Charlotte, a 914 owner and the guy that built and is rebuilding our 914/6 GT 'Huey' has 2 914's he's selling. One is almost rust free, just needs new floor pans and a couple other things (red one). The other is probably better as a parts car, but actually could make a decent car with some work (blue one). the red one has a 1.7 engine in it and actually runs pretty well. Not sure about the other engine - or if it has one.

He's selling both for $3,800 but I know he'd take $3k. Once you do all the work to get it to a 6/GT, you'll probably be able to sell off the unused parts between the two and get most of the initial $3k back.

Here they are listed on Craigslist. http://charlotte.craigslist.org/car/602682477.html
