Default Carb size question...

Hello.
What is the current thinking about what size carbs is best for a stock 2.0 914?
I used to have Weber 40's, but what about 44's?
Thanks.

How stock is stock? I find the CB Performance update kit with horizontal spray bars instead of the auxillary venturi makes a huge difference. You could probalby run 40s and be pretty happy. What do you use the car for?

It's a 29K original, never opened engine...has MSD, stock heat exchangers w/factory muffler or megaphones.
Long time ago was my autocrosser and would like to still do that once in awhile.
What is that update kit?

You probably want 40s then. The update kit uses horizontal spray bars instead of the auxillary venturi . Check it out at www.cbperformance.com.

Also, as you have two threads going, FI would be a good choice too. The systems are generally more $$ though.

Thanks.
I'll check that out.
Had a bad flat spot before w/the 40 Webers, so was thinking about maybe something different.

Flat spots aren't in the carbs, they are in the tuning.

Also, the FI cam isn't that great with carbs- need to tear into the engine and replace the cam...

Dead spots come from jetting and tuning. Normally a lean condition as the throttles are opening. Increase the acceleration jets volume.

Going to bigger carbs WILL MAKE IT WORSE

Did you ever do anything with this? If you did, how did you make out?

I've never been completely happy with my 40 IDF Webers on my car - poor low end throttle response and not very friendly around town.

I've been doing a bunch of research and I foresee an MSD system and a much better fuel pump in my future. Plus a syncrometer and some books on proper tuning.

I do have a WebCam carb cam in there, but it's also a 1.8 over bored to 2.0 - I don't know what the compression ratio is...

I have MSD & good fuel pump...
Still haven't done anything else yet, though.
General concensus is to go with a properly set-up pair of 40's vs. the 44's, but I keep stalling going down that road again.
