Post headers problem

I was all ready for my first engine drop, but having some trouble removing the headers. It seems that on both sides the pipe curves just enough make it neary impossible (from my point of view) to get any kind of tool on the nut. Is there a simple solution that I just don't see? it is a 2.0 with dual exhaust if that helps any. any input would be greatly appreciated.

Which header do you have?

This is one reason the ones with "stub pipes" are preferable...(Eurorace, CFR, maybe Triad) versus the ones that bolt straight up (Kerry Hunter)

The 914's that I've worked on are all pretty similar. I use a 3/8 drive with a 6" wobble extension and a deep socket. This normally works. The size of the socket varies depending on the nuts. I prefer using VW's 11mm copper coated exhaust nuts. They are 25 cents each. They are easy to remove and give you more working room when installing/removing them.

How high do you have the car? I normally put the entire car (front & back) on jack stands set to their highest setting. This makes it easier to work with the header.

1/4" drive, extension, universal joint and deep socket of correct size.
Try spraying them with penetrating oil also. Go have a cool beverage of your choosing. then give it a go.
For reinstallation take your time to ensure that the mating surface is flat use a big file. use new copper sealing rings and I found this copper RTV high temp stuff to make double sure it don't leak. (also keeps the ring inplace). New copper nuts (not NYLOCK) and good substantial washers maybe stainless. for the love of god don't over tighten the thing to make it seal. You will only pull the studs out of the head. tightening evenly both pipes at the same time. then go to the other side.
