Need Help Identifying a part - 914/6
I purchased my 914 a week ago and it came with a 915 transmission. There was also another part (possibly two...I don't remember) that was covered in surface rust. Well I found a picture of the part. It is as follows:
It is the mount on the top. I've identified it as a bulkhead mount. Here is my problem. I can't remember if there were one or two extra pieces laying beside the car when I picked it up. I looked in the engine bay and I see a part welded to the firewall that looks like the bottom piece but I don't know if that is a stock 914 part or aftermarket. It looks similar to the bottom metal piece in the picture. Here is a picture of my firewall:
Does the stock 914 have a piece that looks like the bottom one welded to the firewall? If so, how do you tell the difference between it and the aftermarket piece? If the piece welded to my car is the aftermarket mount can anyone think of another mount that would be needed to put a 6 cylinder engine the car? If not I will assume there was only 1 extra piece on the ground and that I don't need to worry myself sick searching for a part that was never there to begin with. I was told that they had the car ready for a 3.2 engine but sold the engine and then sold the car to me. I've really got to spend some time finding out what I have and what I still need so any insight is appreciated.
I also noticed that the vertical surface inside the fender - behind the rear wheel - has a lot of welding on it. I believe the car might have the chassis stiffening kit pictured below:
It appears as though the pieces were welded in with a solid welding bead around the edges and then the holes (perforations) were also filled with weld giving a bumpy finish instead of a holey finish. Does this sound normal?

Also noticed that my floor pan up front is all metal - including the area around the pedals. Is this normal or aftermarket? I read on Pelican Parts something about replacing the wooden floorboard around the drivers side pedals and figure if mine are metal they must be the upgraded piece. Anyone know?

It looks like the bulkhead mount is already in the car. You will need some bushings for the large holes the bolt the engine to. The stock 4 cyl 914 has the front engine mounts way at the far edges of the engine compartment, so a stock car does not have the mount you have pictured.
Does your 915 trans have the R&P flipped?

Art: I was told the R&P was flipped and that the tranny was converted to a sideshifter. I still don't know what it all means though. How would I tell?
JPIII: Thanks for the picture and description - they clear things up a lot.

As for the trans, just rotate the input shaft and see if the drive flanges rotate in the correct direction.
I'm putting together an old bronco that someone else took apart, so I know a bit of what you are going through. The sideshift trans will require a very simple straight bar to the trans from the bulkhead. It is best if you can find a used sideshift linkage to straighten and modify. You will need to re-weld one of the ends to get the right length. You will also need the shifter from a sideshift car (I think). It is much better anyway. I think when I hooked mine up with the factory (-6) shifter the pattern was reversed. The -4 shifters may be different to start with. Lots of people know this stuff so you should not have too much trouble.
I have a factory 914-6, so I can help with some of your questions. I'll try to keep an eye on this, but I spend most of my time on the 944 board.
Have fun,
