Question 916 Rally GT Carrera?????

Please help if you can.

Today at work, a colleague of mine showed me a several pictures of a RED 916 Rally GT car with a Carrera Script on the doors and hood that is owned by a relative of his. He claimed that this is one of 70 of these cars produced in 1973 (I believe). He thinks that it was a factory race car. The car is supposedly an original car, original paint, low miles.

The front bonnet appears to have a fuel cell.

The car looks like a 914-6 with wide flares front and rear. The nose was body colored, very sculpted and pointy. No chrome, no bumpers or bumperettes either. There are openings in the lower valence for fog/driving lighs or brake cooling. The openings were rectangular with rounded edges.

The front lights flip up like a 914 but have curved trim on the edges. There is a Porsche badge on the hood as well as black Carerra script (similisr to '73 911) across the center of the hood.

As I am a 911 guy (I have a '78 SC Targa and a '93 RSA, I know little about the 914 series. Any information on this car would be great.

Needless to say, I am not familiar with this car. But I am sure one of you is!

Is there such an animal?

How many were produced?

Is this a factory 914 rally racer?

Any background or other information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

marc

Hello

There never was a 916 Carrera GT Rally.

You could order 914/6 GTīs as complete cars ( M 472 )or as prepared cars ( M 471 ) to be finished by yourself.

916īs where never official sold and are based on 914/6 GTīs.

Porsche also didnīt sold Rallye cars, they where prepared for them but today the Björn Waldegaard ex. Rallyecar is owned by Steven Perrey and mainly used on the racetrack. ( If it still is in germany ).

The numbers are around 60 built by the factory:

14 cars used from the factory, they all had been signal/gulf orange. 5 had been made to be used in Rally and durance races ( Targa Florio ).
42 cars used from costumers, some from them ( 2 or 3 ) had been used in IMSA with a choped windowframe.

Some dealers ( Strähle, Max & Moritz, AMAG maybe Ben Pon and Hahn/(Dworazik) ) "finished" GT cars
The privaters built around 20 cars based on normal 914/6 with widebodykit.
( Estimate, not exact datas known )
However there where much more widebody cars build ( I think over 120 and even /4īs )

In 73 Porsche stoped producing 914/6 but they still made several GTīs and ordered some spare bodys.

On the known built numbers and more check out the 914diginet <a href="http://www.dgi.net/914/tech/914-6gtcars.html" target="_blank">http://www.dgi.net/914/tech/914-6gtcars.html</a> or <a href="http://home.hiwaay.net/~jonlowe/" target="_blank">http://home.hiwaay.net/~jonlowe/</a>

Red face

Unless your friend has "factory" documentation to back up his claims, he could have 1 of 70 of nothing, or just yankin' yer chain.

Perusing Dr. Brett Johnson's "<a href="http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/BOOK/POR_BOOK_bkpres_pg1.htm#item4" target="_blank">914 and 914-6 Restorer's Guide to Authenticity</a>", there were no "factory" '73 914/6 GT's ('70 & '71 only), no "factory" '73 916's ('72 only), let alone any "factory" rally-type 916 (basically, a luxury 914/6) emblazoned with "Carrera" decals/badging. Your probably looking at someone's home-grown version of a '73 914 in "GT Wanna-Be" clothing; easy enough to reproduce.

That's not to say that there might not have been some sort-of factory knock-off, but 70 "special" or "unique" 914's would've caught our attention; maybe even the Porsche's own museum.

Hello

The 916 was as luxory as the 911 RS.

But you canīt press costumers to buy a empty lightwight car and so even from the 911 RS 90% had been luxory cars ( 5 with sunroof, two with AC some 100 with electric windows,... )

The 916 was the base modell for a 914/6 evolution and had all the stuff and upgrades to compete in the 2,5 L GT group ( The 914/6 was in the 2,0 GT group.

The main difference to a 914/6 GT was the steelroof.

The 11 916 where based on 914/6 GT bodys.
One car was built on a 70 chassis the other ten on 71 chassis.

When Porsche pulled off the cars ( and pulled off from factory racing 914īs ) they where offered to familiy members and friends from the house Porsche. The cars recived mostly very personalized interiours and two even the new 2,7 RS engine. AFIK they never had a Carrera script or the decals from the factory but some people always improved or personlized there Porsches.

The last 914/6 MY was 72 built untill august 73.
Porsche had to put orders for 914/6 & GT sparebodys in the same year as in 74 the sheetmetalltoolings from the 914/4 changed partially and building a 914/6 in the line from the 914/4 would have runed into several problems making it to complicatet for Karmann.

However Porsche built at least one 914/6 in 75 ( pic shown in Boschen/Barth ) based on a spare GT body.
A other GT spare body was used from TVM Merkle ( Bosch ) who also installed a steelroof and the latest 916 upgrades. That car had a VIN donored from a totaled 914/6 and wasnīt finished before 77.

If my informations are correct the last GT body was sold to a guy named Sieben and the remaining 914 bodys where destroyed ( junked ) in 1984 to clear room for new spare bodys.

To clearify spare bodys had no VIN# and you couldnīt make a "history" with them.

A other sidenote and joke in the Porschescene was a german who replicatet a 916 and somehow managed to have the german papers legalized telling:
manufactorer Dr.hc.F.Porsche AG
Car type: 916
Vin 916 XXXXXX

Porsche never built any 916īs

Grüsse
