Smile WANTED! 914-6 GT Original Parts / Components

I am in the process of completing my "914-6 GT" replica project, which I started, using an extremely clean and low miles original 914-6. Color, "Signal Orange" of course...

As you all probably already know, most, if not all of the original 914-6 GT parts have not been available for many years, as well as, the 400 or so (illusive) “GT Option” kits which were (supposedly) made available in the 70’s by the Porsche factory to anyone wishing to upgrade an “off-the-assembly-line” 914-6 to the "GT specifications".

Out of frustration, I have resorted to reproduce the GT components that I don't have using as reference, original GT parts and components (that's another story that I am not going to get into). By the way, I have yet to talked to, know of, have knowledge of anyone that can verify or provide information, or a list of part numbers of these 400 or so GT Option kits. Do you?

Funny how these 400 kits just simply vanished with no trace. I often wonder how many of these kits were actually installed in 914-6s? By who?? When???! Were the kits all "cannibalized" as they were being used to maintain the GTs that were built and raced by the Porsche factory, racing teams and other privateers?

We have documented (by serial number) to trace approximately 32 or so original GTs, but interestingly enough, we don't have any documentation that indicates to who and where these kits shipped from the Porsche factory. These questions still remain a great mystery and topic of discussion to many others and I...

Anyway, I am currently missing and searching for the following original GT parts to complete my conversion.

(1) Original GT Front Trunk Lid, Fiberglass & Balsa Wood Reinforced.

(2) Original GT 100-Liter Fuel Tank and related installation hardware. I am ordering a racing fuel cell but I still would like to install the 100-liter fuel tank. The 100-liter tank can be later installed at any time once the front bulkhead area has been properly removed and reinforced.

(3) Original GT Oil Pressure Relief Valve. This valve has a unique mounting bracket than the 911 counterparts.

(4) Original GT Oil Thermostat. Same as above.

(5) Original GT Front Oil Cooler - I already ordered a reproduction but would still rather have an original.

(6) Original GT Front Oil Cooler Ducting/Shroud, there are 2 pieces. I ordered reproductions, but again, would rather have the originals.

(7) Original Oil Tank Filler Neck. Very different than that of a 914-6. I understand one can be fabricated and the "oil filler cap" is a very difficult component to locate. The "oil filler cap" is threaded and not like the screw-on radiator type. Not sure where these "Oil Filler Caps" came from. I was told an older "BMW" motorcycle? If anyone knows, please contact me.

(8) Original GT Door Panels with Leather Pull- Handles. I may have located them (according to the owner) but don't know for sure yet. These, by the way, can be easily duplicated (no "rocket science" here) as a "good" upholstery shop can handle it.

(9) Original 906 Twin-plug motor. Not sure what I am going to do if I have to build one. I understand the Twin-plug cap and rotors are no longer available.

(10) CIBIE Driving Lights of the period and vintage.

Luckily for me, I have the rest of the parts needed to complete my GT project as I started very late trying to fulfill my "pipeline dream". I am very grateful to those who have helped me in the past (and present). To those who I don't know yet, I thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide me.

Why am I doing this... I feel we have too many 914s modified in every possible configuration and only just a few "real" 914-6 GTs (GTs built on original factory 914-6s). My goal is to reproduce the GT, using "original 914-6 GT" components as much as possible, whereever possible. After all, that's exactly what the factory did. When original parts are not available, I will simply fabricate them. (No, I am not crazy, I just love the car!)

As to what happened to the "400" kits? I understand the Gary Emory of PartObsolete bought the remaining unused ones from Porsche. That's how he got into the parts biz, buying the old stock that Porsche was getting rid of off the Dealers part inventory. When I saw his relocated business (from Calif to Oregon) this Spring he talked about all the "extra" NOS 914/6 kits he had at one time. Sold them all to racers years ago. He does have a 914/6 Sporto transmission if you want it!
I do have copies of what was included "parts lists" of the M471 option if you are interested.
You might contact Gary to see if he has any ideas where to obtain some of the parts.

Check out this site http://www.auto43.de/ and look in the project section for a 914/6 GT resto. If you want to translate the German, go to babelfish.com and copy/paste in text.

Email them on possible sources for parts in Germany.

Thank you all for the leads! Please keep them coming!
I was already trying to correspond with "Rainer Hummel" months ago who is the owner of the red 914-6 GT at the website you mentioned (http://www.auto43.de/). To date, I have yet to receive a reply, in English or German from Rainer.
I do believe having a conversation with Gary Emory of Parts Obsolete. I will follow up...

The other German fellow to talk to is Roland Kunz. He hangs around PelicanParts 914 BBS and has a wealth of knowledge about these cars. I can look up his email if you want.
