My son now owns a Teener. Or, 3 to be more precise. 3 cars for the price of one. Bought with his money. He's 15 and a half. By the time he gets it working right, he'll be old enough to drive it by himself.

The orange one is the 'good' car. It's a 73 1.7 that has been swapped to a 2.0. Bad clutch, brakes, paint, and so on. But, very little rust.
The white one is a 71 with 1.7 non running, no interior and basically not very nice. Rust holes in the usual places.
The last one is a wreck, I just plan to pull some parts off it and dump the body.

We drove the orange one home. That was fun. After about 3 miles, it started smoking like crazy (Valve covers I suspect) and loosing power. Turned out the brakes were applying themselves, lifted the pedal and it was fine. We got off the freeway an hit the back roads. I settled into a grove of downshifting to 2nd and then 4th and back to 2nd for stop signs and corners. Any time I put the brakes on I had to lift the pedal with my toe or it kept braking. Had to stop at most of the lights and turn off the car, put it in 1st and then start it. Fortunately, it started each time. We made it the 10+ miles home. Andrew is out there wiping the oxidation off the orange paint and cleaning the interior. He want's to make it presentable when his Mom comes home. It's defiantly going to need some work...

Sticking pedal means the bushings in the pedal cluster need to be replaced. Lack of power when hot probably comes frum a leaking MPS (if still injected) go to <a href="http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders/" target="_blank">http://members.rennlist.com/pbanders/</a>
and read carefully and test the whole setup.

Congrats to your son on his first 914, make sure he drives carefully and doesn't get carried away, happened to me at 18 and spent 5 years fixing my error!

Interesting, He was digging through the trunk and found new pedal bushings..
The power loss was due to the brakes engaging by themselves. So maybe there is a master cylinder after all. We'll check it out. I'm sure he'll post pretty soon. (once it gets dark..) <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

What a coincidence. My son just paid off his Cool Blue 74 2.0L We have been working on it since last September. Car has Carbs 44IDF's, WEB 86B cam, Dual valve springs, Port polish work on the heads, U.S. pistons, new clutch, SSI/ Bursch exhaust.
The boy is supposed to get his license next week So I will be putting the Steel bumpers back on. and detuning the motor a bit.
Goes like stink now about 120MPH !!!!
Anybody ever thought of restrictor plates???

You may check to make sure the rubber boot on the master cylinder isnt binding with the rod from the brake pedal. When I changed my master cylinder I somehow managed to get about half the boot crammed into the hole where the rod from the brake pedal goes.

Yup, my first car/s. <img src="graemlins/r.gif" border="0" alt="[king]" /> dont know what else to put, im kinda stunned. last night we spent 2-3 hours getting all the rezido off the paint and everything else. but right now im working on the back yard, the only way we got mom to agree. talking to my friends and one guy just kept on taking my keys and running, well ill post some pics once i get them loaded and once i figure out how, thanks all

We disconnected the master cylinder rod from the pedal cluster. Found out the pedal spring is broken. Only 1/2 of it moves. Plus the pedal is hard to push on with nothing connected. We'll grab one from one of the other cars as this one looks beat. Thanks for the tip, we'll probably change the MC too.

This one doesn't need restrictor plates. It has 34mm webbers. 1bb per side instead of the 2bb 44s that you have. We'll be looking for some replacements in a year or 2 if he can stay away from tickets. In the meantime, it runs pretty good (and slow) with these.

Except for one thing. It pops when it gets above 3500 or 4000 rpm. (Hard to tell, the tach doesn't work). I suspect valve adjust or bad springs. Any other thoughts?

We both can't wait until we can autocross this car.

Pops at 3500 to 4000 RPMs NEEDS more gas. I suspect you are going lean as you start comming on to the main jets.
4000 rpms is where these 44IDF's really start to howl and set you back in seat.
BTW just wieghed the car W/ spare tire full gas tank and the requisite hand tools (15lbs), and me @ 158 lbs. TOTAL is 2220 lbs. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

It's running a Monza muffler and dual 34 ITC Webers but otherwise a stock 2.0 (from what I can tell). So, could the 34 ITC webers be causing a lean condition? Can I richen up the jets to help that out? This car puts you forward in your seat

Sounds light. Are you running fiberglass?

Yes the car is light. Fiberglass front / rear bumpers, air dam and rear valance. No sound deadening, Corbeau Forza seats, no carpet, no radio.
Yup should be able to get bigger jets for the little carbs. I bet they have real good throttle repsonse off idle.
Not to air dirty laundry but my boy turn 16 today. No license any time soon.

Congrats on the new car(s). I wanted to do the same with my kids - but neither of them had any interest in cars. Nearly broke my heart until I remembered they were both girls!

Oh well, ya can't have everything! The youngest - Rachael - has a cool 99 Toyota Pre-Runner though. She calls it her baby and takes excellent care of it. The oldest - Becky - only cares if the car starts or not. She has a 96 Mustang. Both girls pay for their own insurance and car payments. Joyce and I "financed" the cars, but they pay us monthly payments. I think it works out well.

My son has figured out that if he doesn't get his license when he turns 16, he doesn't have to pay for insurance. I think he's debating on waiting. Naaa..

Keith, Thanks, I wouldn't call them new... We're going to try to take his 914 to the Concours on Sunday. Display only. We were hoping to get the dash out of one of the parts cars, but it fell through. He'll be disappointed that the car will look like a beater in front of all the classy concours cars. But, it's his and that's the way it is. In a couple of months, we'll have a good interior in it and the bodywork finished. Lots of learning on this one. He'll be a wrenchead yet.

Well, the youngest is getting married next year. The wife says I can eventually spoil a grandson. If "grandson" turns out to be "granddaughter" - I'll just have to turn the kid to the "dark side".
